So on Cornell’s undergrad admissions page, it asks applicants to send all tests taken (sat, sat II). They say that only the top score will be counted but my dilemma is this. I had a low 2000s sat score first sitting, but the second time I took it I earned a 2300+ with tons of practice. Same with the SAT math II subject test. I only scored a 750 but I will be retaking in October along with Chem. Will Cornell think less of my scores because I took the test more than once? I was planning to ED to Cornell, but should I instead ED to a different Ivy where Score Choice is allowed so I can get in easier? Thanks in advance.
It will be fine. They take the higher scores. If you took the tests like 5 times, it might raise a red flag, but you are over stressing on this.
I think you are overthinking this. Apply ED to the school you want to go to. Your first scores are fine and certainly would not discount you from admission to Cornell.
“only scored a 750”
Sigh…
When I visited, they said they’ll see all test scores but only really pay attention to the highest scores (“that’s all we notice on the voting sheet”).
Edit: Note that this was ILR admissions, but I can’t imagine it’d be too different.
My D took SAT 3X and ACT once, if they like your application they are not looking for reasons to reject you…that is why they “super score”
I wouldn’t bother to re-take SAT II with score of 750, focus on your application and essays instead.
For raising juniors, if you like your ACT scores, I wouldn’t take SAT I just in case if you should get low scores. Most of Cornell colleges require SAT II tests, so you would be required to send in your (low) SAT I scores.
^actually not true. We called twice and spoke to 2 different people to clarify instructions (in 2014). D didn’t have to send in SAT 1 because she used her ACT. So, all her ACT scores were required, and all her SAT 2s were required. The instructions are not that clear on the website.
Were you able to do score choice on the Collegeboard? When D2 was sending her scores in (4 years ago), we didn’t have the option of only sending certain scores.
No, not able to do score choice. Just wanted to clarify the directions about sending in scores, as they are (were…I haven’t seen them this year) a little open to interpretation.
And it’s possible they could alter the instructions from year to year. I just believe if something is not clear, it doesn’t hurt to call and ask. I got better responses from phone calls than from emails.
If your student took both SAT I and IIs, was he/she able to send in just SAT IIs?
Yes, she was. I actually called twice because I wasn’t sure I got the right answer.
“If your student took both SAT I and IIs, was he/she able to send in just SAT IIs?”
No - SATs are one type of test. SAT IIs are the old Achievement Test or Subject specific tests (Chem, Bio, Math, etc.).
Cornell requires 2 SAT II tests.
You can submit SATs or ACTs.
“D didn’t have to send in SAT 1 because she used her ACT. So, all her ACT scores were required”.
D also just sent all her ACTs (2X) and none of the SATs (X1).
My D is a rising Jr. who applied early decision. She took the SAT 1, and did ok, but her ACT score was stellar. She was able to submit only her ACT score and her SAT II scores, without the SAT 1.
