i was looking at the cornell athletics website and noticed that along with hockey, their wrestling team seemed to be very very good. Is this a big spectator sport at Cornell?

Is wrestling a big spectator sport anywhere?

HAHA I have to agree with amdandrew. Hockey is about the only sport people go to.

it just seems like they would be, they have multiple people ranked top 10 in the nation. especially with frey at 133, i would think people would wanna go watch. I know they beat BU 46 to -1. It seems like a team that performs that well would get some more support

and yes, it is a big spectator sport at a lot of places. There are colleges that get upwards of 10,000 people for dual meets. i.e. - iowa

that's cuz it's iowa. plus i bet their hocky team sucks.

jk, but yeah, never heard of wrestling as a big spectator event :/

The only kind of wrestling that's a spectator event is pro Wrestling.

i'll make sure to change that if i get in :)

At my high school more people go to the wrestling matches than football games... Our football team is terrible.

I wish people came to my wrestling matches. Whenever my team has a match no one comes to watch us.

there is no sport like it in high school...two guys going at it head to head, and only one gets his hand raised at the end of a grueling match. Who wouldn't want to go see two guys beat the heck out of each other for 3 periods? if you think about it, it seems like it should be much more popular for spectators

S's boarding school is the top wrestling school in the country (he isn't a wrestler). His roommate wrestles at 112 and just fooling around on campus took down a huge football/basketball player. S said it was really cool. It is a really serious sport and the kid give up vacations etc. for tournaments.

Boxing is cool, but I think wrestling is dumb. It is all about "grabbing" the other guy. Who would want to wrestle when boxing is an alternative?

college boxing, hell yeah! i'm up for that :)

i dont think any wrestler would say that wrestling is about "grabbing" your opponent. Step on a mat with a wrestler and by the time the match is over your not gonna be in pain from him "grabbing" you. Maybe him throwing you, slamming you, barring your arms, etc...but i dont think your gonna say, "man if only i could've stopped him from grabbing me like that"

i didn't even know we had a wrestling team until sometime in my 3rd year

any half-serious wrestler knows how good cornell's team is. good high school wrestling is exciting, but college wrestling is unbelieveable. it's fast, violent, and awesome competiton between two amazing athletes.

momofwildchild - does your son go to blair? rooming with a blair wrestler must be an experience!

Yep. S is a serious athlete in another sport, so the boys are great as roommates and friends. They had the highest roommate GPA in the dorm. Neat environment.

blair's 112 pounder i believe is ranked 4th nationally, so if him and your son are good friends, tell your son to feel free to start as many fights as he wants!

Yep- that's him. He is a great kid. Super student and athlete.
