Although this question has been asked many times, I couldn't find any of the old posts so I thought I'd revive one. How is the dating scene at Cornell? Anything worth mentioning or is it like anywhere else?

I guess I'll throw in my two cents. My honest views from a guy's perspective, views which the vast majority of my friends share.

In my experience the "dating scene" is fairly nonexistent, at least after 1 semester. The only people who "date" or have boyfriends or girlfriends are those who were in a relationship before they came here, plus a handful of other people. What most people concern themselves with is not the "dating scene," but the "random drunken party hookup scene."

This, like everything else at Cornell, seems to be highly dependent on who you know and how much money you have. Seems like all the rich kids from the NY metro area and Jersey magically know each other and keep to themselves to prevent their social circles from being polluted with inferior beings. Unfortunately, this group seems to also contain all of the attractive girls. Which makes anyone who is outside of that group and who isnt either 1) an athlete or 2) in possession of tremendous mojo, out of luck. I have friends who somehow manage to do okay. Not a lot, but some. Dunno how they do it.

I am being sarcastic and overly cynical for the sake of effect. However, it honestly does seem that it is much harder to come by female companionship than it would be at a state school. The fact that the average attractiveness of the women is much lower at CU than at state schools (sorry, but its true) has a double negative effect. First, the obvious. Less hot girls. Duh. The second is just as bad: the elimination of the middle class. What I mean by this is that girls who at any other school would be "average" or "cute" suddenly become worth fighting over once one dons his pair of Ivy Goggles. These marginally attractive girls then proceed to grow huge heads and realize that they can play the field just like the hotties. This spells double trouble for the average guy, who, simply cannot compete with the large number of extremely wealthy/powerful guys who are also interested in the same girls.

Of course, blanket statements are never completely correct, although what I have said unfortunately is pretty true in general. There are a good number of attractive girls at Cornell. And I've heard upperclassmen say that the class of '08 is the hottest class yet. There are plenty of nice ladies out there. The key is just meeting them. This depends on a lot of factors of course, one of the most influential being your college/major. I've heard a lot of people say that freshman year dating just plain sucks. I hope for all our sakes that they are right.

Not being at Cornell (yet), i can't explicitly disagree with you, but I think you're overexaggerating...there are 20,000 people at Cornell...this is not Amherst...there can't be one elite, rich group that gets all the girls.

Lol, no its not quite amherst. And yes, I am exaggerating (as i stated explicitly in my post). But do some quick engi-nerd math. 3000 freshmen. That makes about 1500 girls, right? What percentage do you think are attractive? 20% I'd call that a high estimate. That's 300 of them. Don't think there are 300 extremely rich guys who can woo them with money and looks? Think again. Also, seems that all the hot girls are rich to begin with, which means 1) they only like guys as rich as they are, and 2) they went to the same exclusive high schools as those guys, so they already know a lot of them. I'm not saying its entirely true and that these elite kids get all the girls, but it really can seem that way at times from an average guy's perspective.

join a frat? a rich frat?

lol perro you got me there. It just seems like wealth wouldnt matter. Ok, the guy has money, but whats he going to do with it? Its Ithaca...

im an int'l guy...no probs with money, but my big q. is whether the int'ls are considered a "species unto themselves" by the girls?

i doubt it...in fact, many girls find international students interesting...as long as you're from a cool country and have an international charm, you could do better with the chicks than an American can

do the charm. LOL. Im an indian, who lived in norway for 15 years and now live in korea...i hope that - and NO, I am NOT the typical indian nerd you find at the U.S public high schools, im an athlete. So I hope thats unique enough for some interest to be shown in me ;)

Haha, you guys crack me up. Anyway, I've known a lot of people who went to Cornell from my school, and I think they would agree. One of them went with her boyfriend of two years and said that it was ridiculously easy to stay together because there isn't much else around. I've also heard that Cornell kids can be cliquish. But honestly, I think there's gotta be someone around campus, be it a freshman or otherwise.

All I can say to BigJake is that you have a lot to learn if you just used the phrase "it seems like wealth wouldnt matter" in reference to ANY aspect of Cornell. You're in for a big culture shock.

If I hear one more thing about ugly girls at Cornell I'm going to flip out...

First of all, I find myself to be good looking

Second...I bet the guys are just as ugly, if not uglier than the girls.

Third...if yer such hot **** then go over to Ithaca and pick up some hot girls

:)

perro, what do you mean? And what does rich mean? Private school? Owned a house? Owned a benz?

"Rich" to a kid from brooklyn is a different word to a kid from the NJ suburbs.

Haha Spanks, Amen to that.

Let's switch things up. How about the Cornell GUYS? ;-)

No one said ALL girls at Cornell are ugly. What the bottom line is, is that MOST are below average (think about that for a second) and that those that are decent looking tend to be materialistic and taken. But hell if I care, gives me leess distractions.

i agree, someone tell us something about the GUYS

The guys suddenly stopped talking...uh oh

ahahah. yeah, what happened?

i am applying to cornell, and i look like a monkey! (if that counts for anything).

lol
