strong letters&essays... im definitely looking for advice and opinions - THANKS for reading(:

If you don’t get admitted it will be due to your ACT score. Assuming you are a Junior, raising your ACT / SAT score in the fall should be your main focus if you want to improve your chances of admission.

Since you asked for my “algorithm”:
Base: 15% (CAS)
+5% since “admissible”
+10% GPA
+Bonus 10% for exceptional GPA/rank
+10% course rigor (esp. if your AP score are 4’s and 5’s)
+10% EC’s
+0% ACT score (I don’t think it’ll hurt you, but it’s obviously not helping, a 32+ will give you a bonus 5%).

I don’t account for recommendations/essays. Don’t screw up the essays. I’ve read mediocre essays from students at least as strong by the numbers and that can ruin you. Make sure it conveys what attracts to Cornell, what you will bring to the school, how you plan to take advantage of its resources, and above all else, write it so I couldn’t replace “Cornell” with “University X” and still have the essay make sense.

THANK YOU! as for the essays, i dont want to be immodest, but i am a very strong writer and i think i will be able to convey my passion for cornell successfully. also, both my counsellor and my teachers have promised excellent letters come fall so im hoping their testimonies can make up for my shortcomings on the math section of the ACT. thanks again(:

If it gives you hope, my African American friend was accepted into Cornell this spring. She applied RD.

SAT: 1800
ACT: Undisclosed but I’m guessing around 32
No APs, but honors junior and senior year. Took general pre-calculus as a senior. Her schedule load was very modest – I had more than half the amount of credits she obtained in two years from my junior year alone. Her GPA UW was a 3.79.

No real hooks either. I think her strongest portion of her app was her ECs. She was a straight black woman who was president of United Sexualities at my school, and also led all the other really popular clubs at my school. I’m guessing her great personality shined through her essays as well.

“No real hooks”

“my African American friend”
There you go.

Yep, she stands out, but that’s a hook my friend. Cornell takes its hooks seriously.

As for OP, you have a good shot at ED. RD, may be a bit tougher, but you should still have an average - slightly above average shot. Being Val helps a lot, and your ECs are fair.

haha thanks guys!! im thinking early decision to cornell then, and EA for chicago. i love this all!

^^^
Well, the OP isn’t African American, so I don’t really see how that was relevant… Just curious, do you know which of Cornell’s schools it was for?

I think you have a strong chance, especially ED, but I would retake the ACT or try the SAT.

If you got that ACT to 33, your chances wpuld be a lot better…

also did this mentoring thing where we taught kids the negatives of drug use.
