Cornell's opinion on First Quarter Grades?!

My GC said that she won't be sending Q1 grades because they don't matter..

I'm seeing lots of mixed results on sending Q1 grades for ED applicants.

Anyone please help?! I didn't send them because I found nowhere on the Common App or cornell website that said they were important/necessary/recommended to be sent! CRAP! Should I send them off now? Mine are crap right now for a variety of reasons but by the semester they should be stellar.

PLEASE HELP!

http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/first-year-applicants/application-checklist</a> There is nothing here about first quarter grades?

If they need it they will say it is missing mid November.

Relax; they’re not as important as you think they are.

@KAMEO550‌ are you sure? I’m mega freaking out about this… I feel like it will look like I’m slacking off. What makes you have the opinion that it doesn’t matter? I’m not sure what to think!!

@Kungpaoasian‌ do you know if they do need it though?

@premedprincess13, I recall reading a similar question posted on a previous year’s Cornell ED thread and someoney said that Cornell adcom called the GC in November and instructed them to send the Qi grades. So I think the Q1 grades DO matter, it is part of the decision-making process just like it you apply RD and the Term 1 grades are part of the decision-making process.

My 1st quarter grades aren’t even out yet. You have time to think about this.

I don’t think they need it. They might ask for it if you’re borderline (I honestly don’t know if they asked my GC for them and never thought to clarify) but it doesn’t seem like midterm grades are a big deal for Cornell. Obviously, it’s better if they’re good because you don’t really want to give them a reason to say no to you, but if by bad you mean a couple of B’s or whatnot, it shouldn’t be a big deal.

They are never explicitly required on the website, but people (especially in CoE) have been asked for their first quarter grades before, so YMMV. Sorry if it sounds like I’m contradicting something I posted on another thread–I thought about it for awhile and I know Cornell doesn’t seem to weigh midyear reports very heavily, so it would make sense that mid-semester grades are treated the same way.

Ultimately, it depends on your application and the college you’re applying to. If you seem like a sure admit or vice versa, it probably won’t matter too much.

Best of luck!

Senior fall semester is important. More often than not, it is the last semester when the adcoms will see your grades before they make their decision. Many EDers will send in their mid semester grades, especially if they are good. It is like when people don’t put their GPA on the resume, I usually assume the worst.

If your fall grades are lackluster and your 9-11 grades are stellar then I wouldn’t bother to send in your mid semester grades, but just be prepared that the adcoms may ask for them if you are borderline. As far as being a sure admit, no one is at Cornell.

Our Q1 closed last week and our GCs sent Q1 grades out for every senior applying ED/EA as part of our transcripts. Not optional. We all knew this, so at my school, Q1 grades are taken very seriously by seniors.

Our first Q grades were not out when my D applied ED. An adcom from Cornell called her GC in late Nov. checking on them.If your grades are not as good as they have been I would not send them & wait and see if someone calls. Don’t know if they call for everyone, or just "borderline applicants, only specific colleges, etc.

@csdad‌ yeah I’m still in the tail-end of my First Quarter so I’m really not sure how I’d deal with that! I feel like a lot of East Coast high schools might start earlier so it’s expected that they already have their Q1 or something? Idk! But this is really helpful thanks so much!

My daughter’s high school Q1 closed on Friday, grades will be published this Friday and her GC said they would be sent out to her ED and EA colleges.

My first quarter grades don’t come out until next week. However, my GC claims colleges don’t need to see them. She said I should wait until Cornell calls her for them.
Should I leave this be, or should I specifically request her to send them in?

If they are good, you should send them. Not all GCs are well informed when it comes to college process. When some schools automatically send in updated transcript o EA/ED schools, you have to wonder why some GCs say it is not important.

The Cornell admissions office held a live Twitter session last week where applicants could send in questions. Someone asked about sending 1st Quarter and the admissions officer said that they are required.

The post appears on October 29th

@annwank Yes. Ask your counselor to send first quarter grades to support your early decision application as soon as they are available.

.@dinamgold Since 1Q grades are required, submit these via Naviance or hardcopy through the mail–not through supplemental materials upload

If Q1 grades are good (higher than yur current gpa), why not send them? I would imagine they could only help and not hurt. At the least, they will do nothing.

There is another post about this here from the twitter chat on 10/29. Here is my original post. I was the one who asked the question.
