Coronat scholarship Syracuse University 2023

My daughter just submitted her essays for the Coronat scholarship! We are so thankful and proud that she was even invited to apply. So we’ll see if she gets offered an interview! Syracuse is in our backyard, so it would be a dream come true for her. We likely won’t be able to afford it otherwise, but thankfully she also loves SUNY Geneseo! Is anyone else applying? Please keep me posted and good luck!

All the best to your daughter for Syracuse. Would you be able to share more information about Geneseo? My son has an admit with some merit which brings cost to 27k as an international. Interested in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as major.

Thank you! My husband brought our daughter to tour Geneseo because I happened to be working that day, but they both loved it. It’s a beautiful campus and has the feel of a Liberal Arts College. It’s around 4000 undergrads, so a little smaller than she wanted, but it’s a great teaching school. She is NOT the math/science kid so I can’t speak specifically to those types of programs. The only downside in my opinion is that it’s very rural. Rochester is a medium sized city with a lot to do, but it’s about 40 minutes away. My daughter also doesn’t love that it’s about 65% women vs low 50%s for the other schools she applied to lol She’s very interested in their honors program and study abroad programs. She said it felt very friendly and welcoming. If you have more specific questions I can ask her!

Thanks! My son loves that it is majority women :-).

He has a few competing options at private liberal arts schools (Wooster, Rollins, Kalamazoo) . They are all @10k per year more than Geneseo after merit scholarships. So bit confused how to go about it.

Sorry did not mean to hijack your thread on Syracuse.

I’m sure he does! Lol And totally fine. At least it bumps the thread up! And Geneseo is very likely where she’ll go if Coronat doesn’t work out. So good to talk about Geneseo as well. Still waiting on Bing too… we’ll see!

Hasn’t she gotten into stony Brooke and a couple of other places also? Any particular reason to choose Geneseo over those?

Good memory! Yes, she’s in at Stony Brook, Geneseo, Cortland and Oswego, all with merit. We live in Syracuse so SB is a hike. (Her choice, my husband and I will support whatever she chooses) She did really like the program there and that it’s big and diverse. Cortland could maybe potentially be on the table, but she doesn’t love Oswego. She thought it felt sterile and HATES the cold and weather. She really likes the feel of SU and Geneseo. Brick, Ivy…more liberal arts type vibe. Of course, Oswego is where she got the best package…. Lol So she’s waiting on Binghamton (was deferred EA to RD along with a bazillion others apparently) and actually NYU too. Which is a super ultra reach and we likely would not be able to afford anyway. So once we have all the answers on the table admission and financial wise she can make a decision! We’ll see…

Yeah this year lot of universities playing the wholesale deferrals or even waitlist game. May be many people applied to multiple Universities and I hear backlog from International side for last two years. I think they may be worried that older yield rate numbers may not work this year.

Was she interested in anything at SUNY ESF? They are literally next door neighbors, she would still be able to take 15 credits at Syracuse and use their facilities.

She is not a math/science kid at all. Lol She wants to major in English and education, and I assume those aren’t programs at ESF? But thank you!

Have you heard back yet about the Coronat scholarship? I thought they might notify the kids today, but my son hasn’t received anything. I’m hoping they notify them either way so we aren’t left wondering.

Looking at the past two years, I also thought we’d hear today if they got an interview or not, but we have not heard anything. I feel like Syracuse often sends stuff on Fridays, so maybe next week?

Good luck to your daughter! I’m hoping this means they’ve actually been accepted, since they won’t find that out for several weeks!

I know! I was confused about that too, but I’d be shocked if that wasn’t the case. Hopefully we’ll hear (good news!) about interviews earlier than Friday? I PMed you by the way.

Not yet. Does anyone know if they are likely still receive some sort of merit aid, even if they don’t win the Coronat scholarship? Or is is “all or nothing”?

I have seen in previous years some kids getting other scholarships after not getting Coronat? I think there is one that is also full tuition but not study abroad ect and there definitely is a half tuition one. I’m assuming that interview invites will be Friday at this point? Fingers crossed for all!!

That doesn’t give them a lot of time to prepare! The interviews are next Thursday and Friday (the invitation said). If they get chosen for an interview, that’s a lot of schedule, juggling to do in a week!
