Hello all,
I am going to be a businees student over at nyu stern come fall. Currently, I am a finance and marketing major, but that may change to accounting. The only thing is, I have heard such negativity about ibanking, I'm not sure it is for me anymore. Also, my dream my whole life was to live in a really nice part of Los Angeles, but the more time I spend over there, the more I realize how overrated it is. Its not at all what I had anticipated. its a given I will be in NYC for a few years, but i was toying around with the idea for working at a high end hotel in vegas [ie bellagio, palms, venetian, wynn etc.] Can someone tell me How competitive are these jobs? How much do the various positions make? Do they have amazing perks? Thank you. I know obviously there are marketing positions, but what else? [like, places where a requisite is not a degree in hotel management]

Why not just transfer to hotel management? You haven’t even started classes, so now is a good time to change your mind. Btw, Vegas is awesome and LA is def. overrated.

doesnt a HM degree basically brand you as a concierge, though?

No, it does not. If you get a BSBA in HM you generally specialize in one of the following fields: “The department offers concentrations in Human Resources and Casino Operations and additionally focuses on lodging operations, vacation ownership (timeshare), facilities management, security, law and technology.”

So you need to figure out if you want to work in one of the above departments of a mega casino or if you are more interesting in working the finance/accounting side of it in which case possibly a minor in HM would be better and try to get internships at casinos to express interest in going into that field.

Also of note, Cornell has one of the best HM programs in the country with UNLV right behind it. I have a number of friends majoring in that at UNLV and through them you can get internships at pretty much every casino in Vegas, Macau, Europe etc.

So yeah, figure out if it is the finance side you want to work in or the casino/hotel/resort management side.

bamp bamp bamp

Second going to UNLV or Cornell. Right now things are tough in LV but should be turning the corner shortly. New places open all the time with several coming on next year. I stayed at the Venetian this weekend. The new Palazzo tower and retail are really nice. The Wynn Encore common areas are horribly gaudy. Just awful. YUK.

I can’t think of what you would be in HM if you’re not a concierge? What else would there be that focuses in business. I’m talking corporate here.
And what’s the pay, etc.

why would you pigeon hole yourself with Hotel Management.

I have a buddy that went into real estate development out of Cornell’s Hotel School. It’s definitely an impressive program.

In addition to player development, casinos like the venetian have advertising, marketing, finance, real estate development, IT, HR, and hotel operations. By itself, the casino is like a big company. Many of these casinos recruit top MBA programs, but I’m sure they have positions for undergrads too.

As stated previously, right now is not a good time to get into the casino business, but perhaps in a few years it will be.

Actually the major that many folks are mentioning is "Hotel and Restaurant management. Although hotels aren’t doing well, some restaurants are doing fine. I know of a kid who majored in HRM at Cornell. He started managing an Outback Steak House and now owns an Outback Steak House franchise. He is at most 30 years of age.

Actually I think bad times are the best times to get into a business. You will get to do more and when things improve you will have the experience to move ahead with the company…Anyone can run a company during boom times and look good. Tough times make people more creative and you can make more contribution that gets noticed.
