Correlation between AP scores and college performance?

Chandi good to see you are doing well as a chemistry student. DD is a freshman that only got a 3 on the AP chemistry exam which was her lowest test grade too. She is also a chemistry major. Since she was an IB AP student and got many credits going into college, I pushed her to take the second semster of chemistry to stay on track for early graduation. She had to test into the higher class(borderline but got into it) and never got credit for the first chemistry course which makes me mad. I was deeply worried she would not do well but she is fine so far as a chemistry major and the class did turn out to be fine.

If you’re in a test-heavy major then your AP scores are probably a pretty good indication of how well you’ll do since it’s the same type of environment. It means jack though if you’re in a essay/research-heavy major.

I didn’t do that well on my AP tests (average was somewhere between 3 and 4- got 1 or 2 5s and one under a 3) quite simply because I didn’t study and I didn’t take the AP classes (4 classes and 10 tests). I have a high GPA in college (3.8+) because I am in a paper-heavy major. I do better on papers and presentations than I do on tests (although I’ve done well in my test-based classes, too, just not quite as well and frankly I don’t get as much out of them). Therefore, there is very little correlation between how I did on my AP tests and how I’m doing in college.
