correlation with other likely letters

Hi everyone. just a question. does getting a likely letter from somewhere like dartmouth say anything about your chances at yale? I know people say these schools look for different things in their applicant pools, but still......any ideas?

um probably not.

i know alot of ppl who are accepted at some ivies and not others. its all up in the air.

Thanks! you guys are really quick to respond. I just wanted to know whether getting a likely letter at an ivy means that you are at least in definite contention at one of the more selective ones, whether you get accepted or not.

i got a likely to cornell and my friend got one to dartmouth and we were both def. EA at yale.

being deferred from yale is a lot better than being deferred from harvard for example, or so i've heard. thanks.

@Yale_addict: why? Hahvahd deferee here;)

becuz Harvard pretty much rejects only the people who wouldn't get in even if God wrote them a letter of rec, whereas Yale rejects a lot more people (~30%) EA.

Thxxx WOG, I never sneaked a peek at the EA stats for Yale.

Yes, Harvard defers a lot higher percentage of EA applicants than Yale (as opposed to rejection), but Yale also accepts EA-deferrees at a much higher percentage than Harvard in the RD round.

But yeah it really just depends. I was accepted EA at Harvard, got a likely from Yale, but haven't received anything at all from Columbia. so who knows? A lot of schools (i.e. Cornell) send out a lot more likely letters than others.

last year my brother was deferred EA by harvard, received a likely from yale (directed studies program) and dartmouth, but wast then waitlisted by harvard in the spring. it's completely unpredictable.

candlize: Columbia only sends likely letters to applicants who applied to the Fu Engineering School.

What bothers me about Yale's likely letter is that it guarantees acceptance in DS or PS. I'm not sure how hard it is to get into one of these programs (I'm interested in DS) but since I was accepted EA I really didn't have the same chance to get in as someone who applied RD. Of course, I'm almost certain I wouldn't have gotten a likely, but I'm just pointing out that an equally qualified (or perhaps even more qualified) applicant would be disadvantaged in applying to PS or DS by applying EA.

I mean, I do understand that it's all about matriculation. But I wish it wasn't, you know?

yeah, but it's life. i'm white and privileged. that sucks.
