COSMOS 2012 Waiting Board

Online applications are now closed! This means us applicants have to now play the horrific two-month waiting game.

Apparently, teacher recommendations are now not due until March 8th.

Post your campus and top 3 cluster choices! I made this thread because it was getting hard to figure out who was applying to what on the larger thread. This will hopefully make it easier for people to see who is applying to the same clusters and to chance themselves among fellow applicants.

I’ll start!
Campus: UCD
Clusters: Chemistry of Life, Intro to Engineering Mechanics, and Computers in Biophysics and Robotics in that order

EC’s mentioned: Science Club, Science Olympiad, Academic Decathlon, National Honor Society, and Band
UW GPA: 4.0
Weighted: 4.1 (Only 2 weighted classes this year: Honors Chemistry and Pre-Cal)

I have a feeling these next two months are going to be extremely painful…

Campus: UCI
Clusters: Tissue & Tumor Biology and Mathematical/Computer Modeling, Biomedical Sciences - Clinical Translational Science, Astronomy & Astrophysics

EC’s: (Horrible really, none of them are STEM related) American Cancer Society, Mock Trial, Class Council, Piano, and Volunteer work
UW GPA: 4.0
Weighted: 4.6

Best of luck to everyone! ^__^

@vivng6991: Ditto. I’m going to be agonizing throughout the whole wait period. D:
Good luck! Your weighted GPA will help you immensely! :o

by the way, last year the app period was 1.5 months. this year, it is only 1 month.

Campus: UCSD
Clusters: Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine, The Amazing Red Blood Cell, and Bright Ideas in that order

EC’s mentioned: (nothing related to STEM except one)
Studio Oil Painting, a Tutoring Job I chose to mention over volunteer work, ACS officer position, medical club officer position, Exploravision (based most of my essays on it/related to it in some way. Submitted online app this early morning because I was not aware of the extended deadline, found out that I won an award a few hours later during class, could not add my exploravision award to my app because it was already sent in :frowning: )
UW GPA: 4.0
Weighted: school does not weight

@MomentumA7: 1 month??? Is UCSD sending out decisions in early April? The people at the UCD are promising decisions by May 1st as usual but stated that they will most likely reveal decisions during the last week of April. (It probably takes longer for UCD because of the overwhelming amount of Biomed and Biotech cluster applicants. /sigh)

Congratulations on your Exploravision Award!!! I did a project in fifth grade, but it was done without all possible focus and definitely did not get any distinctions. XD

noooo
sorry
I mean app period as in the day online apps begin until the day it is due.

last year the app started in feb and had a deadline in mid march.

this year it started in feb and is due at the very beginning of march (so applicants have less time to complete their apps this year)

Oh no, vivng6991 and I were both talking about the waiting period so I misunderstood. Sorry about the confusion!

Hey all
Campus: UCSD
Clusters: tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, biotechnology: red blood cell
Ectracurriculars mentioned:

 1. Speech and debate (captain and pres as well as cofounder)
 2. Academic league (freshmen and jv captain)
 3. BEWiSE winner (science for women)
 4. Girls empowerment conference (I’m pretty much organizing a 200+ conference. It’s so much fun XD)
 5. John Hopkins Talent Search Grand Award

GPA: 4.33

I’m so so so nervous :)

@cosmogony - Thank you :)

I’m just worried because I don’t think they care too much about the weighted GPA? Whereas my extracurriculars are so unimpressive it’s almost sad. Plus I’m a freshman so from what I’ve heard, my chances are already lowered.

Hiya guys
Campus: UCSD
Clusters: Bioengineering-The Red Blood Cell, Tissue Engineering, and Earthquakes!
Who else applied for Earthquakes at UCSD? I like know nobody :P

lowly 8th grader
UCD
Biomedical Sciences
Computers in Biophysics and Robotics
Computer security, privacy, and cybervillany

is it seriously true that they only accepted ONE 8th grade student last year?

:)
Campus: UCSC
Clusters: Chemistry&Environmental Toxicology, Marine Mammal Biology, Nanochemistry

I posted this on the other thread, but I’m not sure if everybody moved over here. I postmarked my docs today, on March 2 - will they still be accepted?

@vivng6991: You’re a FRESHMAN with that GPA? Man, my school doesn’t even offer weighted classes for freshmen. And two is the most you can take sophomore year. That’s why I thought I was at a disadvantage. I can’t wait until next year when I have all IB classes and can hopefully get a 5.0. Then my cumulative GPA will be better.
Don’t worry, I think you’re fine! Especially if you had a good essay.

@cherrysunsets2: Yes, documents postmarked on March 2nd will be accepted.

@yongqi90301545: I heard that was true at UCSD. I went to the UCD open house, though, and they said that they tend to accept more 8th graders than normal in comparison to other campuses. Don’t lose hope!

Campus: UCD
Cluster: Biomed only, didn’t want to write essay, so no second choice LOL
EC: swim team…quiz bowl…CSF…and I don’t remember
GPA U/W: 4.0
GPA W: 4.14
recommendations: probably good considering I’m top 5 for my ap bio class… ..
CST test: LOL basic for math because my ■■■■■■■■ teacher gave me a totally different review for the test…--

…One does not simply apply for Biomed with that CST test result…im screwed lol

@KenLOL95 Don’t say that… there’s always a chance. Especially if your essays were good because that’s the most important part of the application.

yea, but i shouldn’t have applied to biomed only, it’s prety mcuh a guaranteed rejection

@viving Danggg, my school doesn’t even offer AP’s to sophomores unless you’re done with your necessary credits to graduate. Lucky :stuck_out_tongue:
@cosmo You’re taking IB’s? My school doesn’t offer that but I heard its like less difficult than an AP, or am I wrong?

@Cosmogony - Man, really? That sucks. At my school all honors classes are weighted even for freshmen, and there are four “opportunities” to take honors for freshmen (English, math, science, and history), so…

But your EC’s are incredible!

@KenLOL95 - Hahaha well, your GPA and recommendations are good… if your essay is good you probably still have a chance!

LUCKY! lol my school doesn’t weight anything till sophmore year :frowning:
my essays are probably bad since I did them in like…20 minutes no proofreading lol oh wells
