COSMOS 2012 Waiting Board

UW GPA: 3.9
Weighted GPA: 4.35

ECs: Mock Trial (top at school), VP of Math Club, Founding Officer of FBLA branch at our school, JSA member

Apped to: UCSC; Logic and Number Theory, Video Game Design, Chemistry and Mathematics in Everyday Life

Hugely worried.

@swalrus: Why you worried?

Everyone’s worried! :O

sigh if I don’t get into COSMOS, I have nothing else this summer T__T
all the other programs I considered turned out to be horrible, so I had to withdraw my applications :(

@swalrus12 - Hey nice, I’m in mock trial too :slight_smile:

@MomentumA7 - Yeah if I don’t get into COSMOS, I’ll probably just spend the whole summer preparing for APs and PSAT -___-

Volunteer somewhere! I wish I was old enough to intern -_-

Yeah you can never have enough volunteer hours. Especially since during the school year there’s like no time.

If you don’t mind me asking, where are you all from? Is there anyone applying from put of state? (I’m from Orange County.)

*out of state, sorry

San diego! :)

I’m from a city directly in between Sacramento and San Francisco. It’s extremely convenient. :D

If I don’t get accepted into COSMOS, I’m spending the summer taking a Spanish III course at a college, studying for the SAT (trying for a 2300, currently at a 2190 in practice tests), and reading the IB Physics SL study guide. If I get into COSMOS, I’m going to have to drop the hopes of a Spanish III class (which would give me a higher GPA next year since IB Spanish is weighted) and devote less time to SAT/IB Physics studying. But I’m sure I’d have a heck of a time!

LOL still bringing all my AP, IB, and SAT prep books in hopes for some time to study if I get in. :]

@cosmogony
Why are so many applicants on this thread talking about IB classes? My school does not offer them, and I honestly still do not understand what they are. Are they special academic tracks you can sign up for, or another type of accelerated class?

I see most people listing the following as their alternative summer activities:
-SAT studying
-SAT II studying
-PSAT studying
-AP Class self-studying
-volunteering

The problem is that my original plan was to do all those things and go to COSMOS as well. I am soooo worried.

alternatives
SAT cramming
AP studying and assignments (3)
learning basic chem…
reading that HUGE medical pathology text book i just bought (epic book :D)
and maybe a summer job 2 get me some CHA-CHINGS lol

and whos taking a SAT subject test this year? :D

@missiris LOL thats exactly what I’m going to do! lol, except that I’d probably have to bring in thesaurus sized books…

Has anyone taken there SAT II for Bio/Mathematics yet?
I really really wish I had free lunch so that I dont have to pay for all these tests and could take them as many times as I want to -_- but nope.

A person in my AP English class has reduced price lunch and she only has to pay $5 per AP exam when they’re normally $87. :O

@MomentumA7 IB (International Baccalaureate) is sort of similar to AP, but it isn’t just classes. If you’re in the full program, you write this extended essay research paper and do a CAS thing. I HATE THE EXTENDED ESSAY.

@missiris
I find it odd that my school does not have IB.

I don’t think my school offers IB classes either. @missiris I’m from Orange County as well!

Not to sound pessimistic, but I can pretty much guarantee that you guys will have little to no time to study/do homework. Most of your time will be spent in class and/or lab and the rest will be hanging out with the people in your cluster. Towards the end, you’ll be focusing on your final research project (depending on your cluster), so spend a lot of time in the library.

@chocolatechip Is the campus like empty since its during the summer and what not?
