Past science and math teachers are definitely allowed. ^^
UCD Open House tomorrow! :D

They said they would like at least 1 current teacher and then another can be past. Other than that, the program sounds amazing, of course haha. There’s additional UC application credit available to attendees of cosmos as well
And they confirmed that the essays are THE most important thing. The main essay topic is a choice between two:
What excites you most about math/science and why do you want to spend the month t cosmos?*

Describe a project or experience you worked on that furthered your interest in a specific math/science topic.

I actually changed my mind! I want to apply for UCSC in cluster 7- Astronomy and Physics: From the Infinitesimal to the Infinite*

Does anyone know how many people applied for this last year? I posted my stats already in the previous page so… if anyone can chance me? Thanks! I’m just so nervous and I want it so bad!!

yeah, i heard the essay was really important. I’ve got to figure out how I’m gonna translate my passion onto a piece of paper!! thanks for sharing nicolestarb!

This program sounds really interesting, but is it truly $6500 for non-Californians with no financial aid?

I think it’s a lot of money, it’s better to get a job. It’s $2810 for Californians(UCSD)

Out of state really is that much. It’s mainly because the program gets funding from tax dollars as it is, so if you live out of state, you aren’t “contributing.”
They give quite a but of financial aid though(for CA residents). :)

I’m also applying for UCSC and I’m also pretty worried. I can’t decide between Astronomy or Number Theory for my top choice (does anyone know which is easier to get into? Or which is more fun?).

Also, does anyone know if it is easier to UCSC or UCI? I live in the faculty housing at UCI (my parents are professors) and want a change of scenery for the summer, but maybe I’ll stay in Irvine if it’s easier to get in.

One last thing, @lalalove7 do you mean the worksheet recommendation thingy or can we include letters of recommendation aswel?

I’m so nervous!

@DanieCalifornia It depends on the cluster you apply to, but I think UCSC has more applicants, based on numbers from 2009, so I don’t know how reliable we should consider it :)

Personally, I’m applying to UCI for multiple reasons. I’m so nervous too!

@vivng6991 Thanks for replying!

UCI is great too. It has a really nice campus, and I really like the observatory (I think you get to use it if you are going to the astronomy cluster). I know you guys get to go on fun field trips like to Knott’s Berry Farm and the beach. I’d be thrilled to go to UCI except that it doesn’t really have a math cluster (in the number theory sense) and also it won’t be the same experience if I see my parents in the cafeteria at lunch everyday :).

I hope you get in!

@DanieCalifornia No problem!

I do really like the UCI campus; I live in Irvine so I’ve been there several times (one of the reasons I’d like to go there for COSMOS, since I’m already kind of comfortable there).

You’re right, there isn’t really a math cluster, but there is an astronomy one that looks pretty interesting! But I think regardless of where you have “the best chance” of getting in, you should choose whichever one you like the most.

Wish you the best in your application as well! :)

Hey guys I did Cluster 7: Bioengineering/Mechanical Engineering at UCSD last year as a rising senior. COSMOS was really fun and I’m still in touch with some of the people I met there, but it didn’t really help me that much because it didn’t give me anything to write about for a college essay, per se. Like we just did labs and not quite a final research project. I, however, did get some awards and $150 in scholarships for my work during my time there so it wasn’t altogether useless.

@vivng6991 Yay Irvine! Did you go to the open house? (I may have seen you there) I think I’m going to go with the math cluster at Santa Cruz regardless and I’ll just cross my fingers!

@ DanieCalifornia
are you planning on doing the astronomy & physics cluster at UCSC? because I’m applying there too and I’m very, very nervous!!

@lalalove7
I can’t decide between Astronomy & Astrophysics and Cluster 1 (Math). They both sound amazing and I change my mind every five minutes. Either way I am applying to UCSC’s Astronomy & Astrophysics cluster at least for second choice.

@DanieCalifornia No, I didn’t go to the open house because I was actually busy that day…
Well good luck at Santa Cruz!

And good luck to everyone else as well. Two more days until the application period starts!

Apps are opening soon guys!!!
Oh by the way, please help me decide what to do this summer…i’m still debating whether or not I should do COSMOS if I’m accepted…

These are my ish-stats if you want to chance:

incoming senior asian female (lolz)
3.9 ish UW
4.3 ish W
top 10
robotics all yrs & captain
engineering team captain and 2nd place state 10th~present
key club d15 tech editor and all years
math and science club all years and secretary
CODE club treasurer 11th grade~present

not great…but…chance please? =P

Can anyone supply the stats from 2011 or previous years? I’m debating which cluster I want to apply to

sorry if it this is a stupid question, but has anyone been able to access the online application? Everytime I click the “apply now” or “create account” button, I keep getting sent back to the homepage. Is the online application only the application guideline wksht?

The application is working for me, maybe try again on a different browser?

@lalalove7 They changed the clusters! Astronomy & Physics is now Astronomy & Oceanography, which sounds cool too but isn’t what I was prepared for!

@DanieCalifornia yeah… I’m not going to apply to UCS because of this. I’m just going to apply at irvine because I heard their courses are pretty cool. And it’s what I want to study:astrophysics. Let me know what you’re gonna do!
