Do service clubs count for academic-related activities?

What clubs are you guys choosing to highlight in the application? (Do you guys think they consider clubs in middle school if they’ve had a significant impact on math/science education?) I’m kind of upset because I have lots of (non math/science but academic) clubs and was going to mention them all but don’t have room anymore because of this new system that has a 5-activity limit. ):

Anyway I’ve chosen:
Band (middle and high school)
Science Olympiad (middle school)
Math Olympiad (middle school)
Science Club (high school)
National Honor Society (middle and high school)

I can swap them out for (all high school) Journalism, JSA, Academic Decathlon, and varsity tennis… opinions?

I don’t think you should put band…as much as you’re dedicated to it.
Keep science club, math olympiad, and scioly (any recognition?)
Add academic decathlon as well…(better if there is recognition)

I know it’s kind of a waste to leave out NHS but I don’t think it’s relevant for COSMOS.

Just my opinion :P

I’m choosing…tsa/jets, math and science club, key club divisional tech editor, robotics, and I was thinking of a service club where I designed shirts and sold them for profits…but i’m not sure that would count as academic.

Otherwise, I would put physics club VP, and code club treasurer…the clubs never have meetings though. Any opinions?

@ jesskidding- which cluster are you applying to? I think if you’re doing physics, the club VP may help you

I’m getting very discouraged filling out this application. I have never been a part of a big science fair or competition and I feel terribly inadequate.
what exactly is considered “academic”?

The activites I have are not very relevant to science but tell me what you think!

-NHS
-CSF
-Science Alliance (mentoring 5th graders for their science fair project)
-2 yrs of swimming
-5th year doing choir
-volunteer 3 hrs a week

I’m applying to some kind of computer-related cluster at UCSD (#1?) I’m not sure yet.

And I’m with you on your question, lalalove7. I think I’m just going to exclude the volunteer activities I’m involved with.

I would suggest to include Science Alliance, CSF, NHS…try to think of other STEM-related activities.

I don’t think you should put band…as much as you’re dedicated to it.
Keep science club, math olympiad, and scioly (any recognition?)

Add academic decathlon as well…(better if there is recognition)

Actually, at the open house, the people said that they like to see music on there as it has ties with math and science. (I dunno, they said it, not me. I guess it involves physics of sound and math subdivision? XD)

I dunno if I should include Academic Decathlon because my only recognition is a first place award… in English. lol Would it still be a good idea to put it in?

Hey guys, do you think I will be automatically disqualified if I have my bio teacher and ENGLISH teacher write my rec letter? I really don’t know any of my math teachers and I’m pretty sure my English teacher understands be best and can write me the best letter.

They’re not allowing any non-math/science teacher recs this year so probably yes.

@cosmogony: Oh yeah, if you guys are applying to that music/math thing then for sure put band But I was assuming you guys weren’t hahaha.

I think you should put down the English thing (since you said you were number 1 and don’t have many other ec’s).

Although STEM is obviously very important, I’d suggest highlighting activities that portray you as a “leader” and “dedicated” as well. If you’re president of speech and debate, write it. There’s relevance in science to communications and speaking skills as it is, on top of that you’d be a “leader figure.” just one example (:

I’m section leader for my choir… But I’m applying for astrophysics. Should I still include it?

Also for letters of rec, I printed out the guide to give to teachers and on it it says they will email the teacher. How do they know who I’m going to ask?

I’m an international student and I’ll be applying to COSMOS this year. However, I really have no idea as to which campuses are the best as opposed to which are the easiest to get into. It probably depends on the clusters you apply for? I will probably be applying to UCI since my top choices are cluster 2: Astronomy and Astrophysics - From atoms to stars, galaxies and the expanding universe and cluster 4: Life on the edge- biodiversity and ecosystems of coastal california. But I’m still not so sure. I want to major in engineering-most probably environmental, but I also LOVE astronomy. I think this is a good combination of both. How competitive are these two clusters to get into? How does UCI compare to the other UC’s? Cluster 7 (Astronomy and Oceanography - Deep explorations of Outer and Inner Space) in UCSC sounds great too. I’m really confused. Could you guys please help?

@lalalove7 - about the letters of rec, when you create an account to apply for COSMOS, there should be a tab where you can enter your teachers’ emails, and they’ll be sent a form to make their recommendation on.

@idream17 - based on numbers from 2009 (so probably not very reliable or accurate), UCI is, overall, one of the least competitive choices (least number of applicants). A comment on this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/862532-cosmos.html thread shows applicants from 2009. You should really just choose whichever cluster from whatever school you think is best for you. :)

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has the list of the number of people that applied to each cluster from last year? I remember seeing one last year for the previous year, but I can’t seem to find the one for for last year.

@cosmogony: Oh yeah, if you guys are applying to that music/math thing then for sure put band But I was assuming you guys weren’t hahaha.

I’m not applying to the math/music thing, but the admissions people recommended music on there anyway. Plus most of my leadership positions are in band haha Thank you though for your help!

Scioly and math olympiad are from middle school. Do you still think that’s okay? (I’m a sophomore.)

@idream17- I went to the UCI open house and they said they received 550 applications and accepted 160. This year they are only accepting 140 and are excepting to get about the same number of applications. I know it sounds scary but I’m sure you’ll do fine!

okay, thanks a lot!

I’m applying to UCSD for:
- Cluster 8 - Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine 2)Cluster 7 - Bioengineering/Mechanical Engineering: The Amazing Red Blood Cell
- Cluster 3 - Living Oceans and Global Climate Change

I’m so excited! Do you guys have any teacher fellows at your school? I do and their giving workshops on how to write the essays and what not.
Any tips?

@nicolestarb, you were at the meeting on the 21st at UCSD? Were you the girl that asked a bunch of questions because I overheard one of her friends saying her name was Nicole but I’m not sure, haha.

I’m in 8th grade, applying to UC Davis, to
- cluster 7 biomed science
- cluster 5 cpus in biophysics and robotics
- cluster 4computer security, privacy, and cybervillany

unwt GPA of 4.000 (school doesn’t weight GPA)
Mathcounts team Grades 6-8
I’ve been tutoring high school math and english for 2 years ( I hold a leadership position here)
I took Alg 1 and 2 in grade 6, geometry in grade 7 and 8 (had to retake, because the middle school didn’t offer anything higher)
what do you think my chances are? and do you think I will qualify for financial aid (partial) on a $50000 income for a family of 5?
