I am applying to UCD in clusters 4 (Introduction to Astrophysics), 5 (Computers in Biophysics & Robotics), and 7 (Biomedical Sciences) in that order. I am a freshman. Here are my stats:
UW: 4.0 W:4.6
Computer Club
Latin Club
Over 100 hours volunteer service for a hospitial
One of three students in a specialized computer programming group
Biology League

Any returning COSMOS alumni that care to share some info? Is anyone else applying for COSMOS this year?

Hi there! I did COSMOS last summer at UCSC, cluster 5 video game design. I would definitely say that it was the best month of my life. If you have any questions, I’d be more than happy to answer them c: (if I can, that is, I’ve heard that things vary quite a bit from campus to campus)

You can’t apply to Cluster 7 for your third choice. It’s a first choice only cluster.
It’s nice to see they brought Astrophysics back, though! They took it out of the program in 2012 but it had been cluster 9 for at least two years before that.

Aw too bad, I wouldn’t want to have Biomed as my first choice, but my friend went a couple years ago and said she had a great time. Thanks for letting me know :)

And Mikaaa, that’s great! I am hoping I will get accepted. What did you list as your extra cirriculars on the application? If you don’t mind me asking.

hey guys! im also applying to COSMOS. im applying to uci (cluster 6 biomedical sciences and cluster 4 life on the edge:biodiversity and ecosystems of coastal california). i need some help writing my essays. i just don’t know how to make my essays stand out and show my true passion for science. any tips?

hey im applying to UCD for BIOMED and Chemistry of Life. Nice grades. I have a 3.84 unweighted, and a 4.21 weighted but that includes freshman year. My GPA w/o freshman is 4.5, and I play 3 sports, do MUN, did the science fair, got 3rd place in Science Bowl, and have over 600 hours in temple volunteering. I also go to one of the top High schools in the state.

omg. im applying to UCI and now i’m almost finishing my essay but it’s like idk what to put?! Im barely a freshman and i think i wont get in! Im stuck on what i have to include in this essay! Help?

oops, sorry for the really late reply haha. I… honestly don’t think my extracurriculars were very special. Unfortunately I don’t think I kept a record of what I entered, but of what I remember I had speech and debate, computer science club, usaco, red cross club, french club, and this other local organization i volunteer for. no leadership positions though :O

Hi, I’m a sophomore applying for COSMOS in UCSD. I’m applying for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine as my first choice and Bioengineering/Mechanical Engineering (The Red Blood Cell) as my second choice. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should write my essays? I’ve never applied for something like this before and I’m totally stumped.

@Mikaaa Do you know how competitive UCSC’s Video Game cluster is? I’m extremely interested in applying, but my stats aren’t amazing. If it’s too hard to get into, I should probably choose something else :/

oh gosh sorry again and it’s probably too late now lmao but it is one of the more competitive clusters (i think one of the marine biology ones is the most competitive at UCSC, though, so I guess video game design is second most competitive) but it’s also the largest cluster–we had 25 or 26 people in our cluster, while most others only had 22 or something like that, which is more than they used to have. Our instructors wanted to give the opportunity to be in the cluster to more students, so they pushed the program to let them accept more students. But I think instructors change every year, so it may depend.

But honestly, I know this is cliche, but apply to what you really want to do. I saw the other clusters doing their work, and know that if I had done any of those clusters I wouldn’t have had as great of a time.

Hi! I’m a Junior applying for COSMOS at UCI. The Astronomy and Astrophysics cluster is my first choice. Does anyone know how competitive it is to get into?

Hi, I am a sophomore and I also applied for UCI Astronomy and Astrophysics as my first choice and Heart of Chemistry as my second choice. Unfortunatly, my chances are not great, as I have a 3.95 unweighted, and only a 4.0 weighted. My extracurriculars were also all music or tutoring related, so not a great chance. How competitive is my first choice cluster?

I’m a sophomore and I applied for UCI. My clusters were Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Tissue and Tumor Biology and Mathematical/Computer Modeling. I was wondering how competitive they were and how good my chances were of getting in.

GPA is 4.0 Unweighted and 4.14 Weighted
Taking AP Calculus AB (if that makes a difference)
For extra curricular I put that I am in the Youth Grantmaking Committee, Upward Bound (secretary), Sharp(secretary), Octagon, and do community service at a local elementary school.
My short answers were okay to good, I think.

Hi im a freshman this year and I took all possible honors I could take as a freshman. I got a 4.0 GPA.
what are my chances of getting into the UCI Biomedical science or the Genes Genomes and Genomics clusters
My short answers were alright not too bad (but i dont know how to make it stand out…)
