Anyone applying to UCI?
@Kelvin No, unfortunately… I’m applying to UCSD
@The5458Captain, good luck!
@Kelvin82 Thank you, you too!
Actually, I may change my clusters. Again. My parents are now saying that I should choose a campus close to home, but they’re also saying that I should pick a cluster I really don’t want to pick as my first choice at both of those campuses. Great.
@topaz1116 What? Really? I’m sorry…
What are their reasons for having you choose a closer campus and an ill-favored first choice cluster?
@okaysq
Sorry for the late response.
I did not have strong math / science EC.
My ECs were:
School math team
Individual mini science project
Environmental club
I think my letters of recommendation were absolutely fabulous though (especially my science teacher’s).
Make sure your teachers knows that you are really serious about science. If I remember correctly, there was a section for teachers that allows teachers to judge your seriousness / passion for science.
Good luck to everyone applying!
@The5458Captain closer campus: not a long drive + they can visit me on parents’ weekend; the clusters they want me to take are computer clusters, and while some are interesting, they want me to do the Computer Networking one at UCSC, which seems really, really boring. But in their mind, “if you learn it now, you’ll know if you want to do it.” Well, I’d rather do it on my own time. Also, they want me to take a cluster on “something useful.” Which my first choice clusters for UCD, UCSC, and UCI aren’t (all involve astronomy, which they think is a waste of my time).
@fusioneer98 your math/science ECs are definitely a lot stronger than mine (AKA just teaching math and science to elementary school kids).
Hey guys, can someone answer my question please?
Where do we send the transcripts? Are you supposed to send the transcripts together with the confirmation page, AFTER you have completed the application?
Is being a freshman a problem for applying to COSMOS? I heard that there’s a large age bias where the admissions people prefer sophomores and juniors and give them priority. Will this be an issue for me? Thanks
When I went, there were way more rising seniors and rising juniors than rising sophomores, but I’m not sure if that’s because less freshmen apply or because it’s harder for them to get in.
@topaz1116
Teaching math and science is a notable extracurricular. Not only does it show that you are engaged in your subject, but it also give the admission officers a better sense of your character. If you can communicate your passion of teaching and inspiring younger generations, that may be a huge boost to your application.
Never compare yourself with other applicants because statistics and extracurricular can take you only so far. You as an individual is more important than those other factors that everyone shares.
You seem to have a problem choosing your cluster. If you enjoy astronomy, go for astronomy. I took astronomy and I do not regret it at all. Go for it. I do not know what exactly your parents want you to get out of COSMOS but you really should convince them that you want to study astronomy.
@Jinxwizard
I went to COSMOS as rising sophomore. Yes, there were a lot more rising juniors and rising seniors than rising sophomores like dsi411 said, but it is definitely possible. We even had two rising freshmen. It shouldn’t be a large problem.
@okaysq I think you have to go to your school’s registrar to request that an official copy of the transcript be sent directly to the COSMOS office.
Also, I am also applying to UCSD. woot let’s meet up if we get in
@Cornbread1999 Which cluster?!?
@The5458Captain back to Cluster 7 and 6. I was thinking about applying to Cluster 8, but I decided that cluster 7 was a better experience for me.
@Cornbread1999 Haha, I originally applied for Cluster 7 but changed to Cluster 8. My second choice is Cluster 1.
@okaysq, I emailed my campus, UCI, and the program coordinator said to send transcript and confirmation letter together. On a side note, did anyone finish their application?
@Kelvin82 Thanks! This is helpful.
@Kelvin82 what confirmation letter?
@Cornbread1999 I believe that after you submit your application form, a confirmation letter shows up.
On the website it says: “Confirmation page - The signature section that follows this page, signed by both applicant and parent or guardian.”
Oh, and @Kelvin82, no, I have not finished my application, unfortunately. Hopefully I can do it all by this weekend.
