The COSMOS website says “Unfortunately, due to the high number of applicants, COSMOS alumni are not eligible to apply a second year.”
Also, someone told me that colleges don’t like it if you have attended COSMOS more than once. I’m not sure if this is true, but it makes sense as attending the program more than once gives less people a chance to attend for the first time.
Anyone here applying to UCSD COSMOS? It’s the best campus for COSMOS, in my opinion (not that I’ve been to any of the other ones). And they have the best website too. http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/cosmos/index.shtml Those are all pictures from last year. Pretty cool, huh?
@Cornbread1999 Good choice. I don’t know much about clusters 7 or 8 because they did a lot of things separately, but I know a lot about cluster 6 since it was my cluster. According to the website, one of the professors is new this year. We had Dr. Williams but someone is replacing her.
UCSD doesn’t have any Astro clusters, so that’s out for me I was thinking about applying to Oceans/Climate Change, but I’d rather do a different one.
@The5458Captain don’t worry, I don’t know where I’ll apply either. At first I was pretty set on UCI, but I’m not sure anymore since the clusters changed. UCSC has some pretty cool clusters now too.
I am applying to UCD (Cluster 1: Biotechnology; Cluster 8: The Chemistry of Life). Both clusters seem really interesting.
Has anyone actually finished his/her application? I’m still working on my Statement of Interest, and I haven’t even approached my teachers for recommendations yet! I really delayed working on my application because I used finals as an excuse. Sigh.
I finished my Statement of Interest, but I have to work on my cluster things, especially since I don’t freaking know which ones I’m applying to -_- My school has a rule that you have to give teachers at least 3 weekends to write a recommendation, so I had to ask my teachers for the rec last week… Hahaha I’ve been delaying a lot of things because of finals too.
I still need to finish my statement of interest, and my cluster essays. How are you guys doing with the academic section of activities? My list looks dismal; barely anything is on there.
I’m almost done with my statement of interest, but I haven’t asked my teachers for recommendations yet. I think I nailed the each cluster question better.
My parents are trying to make me pick a Computer cluster (specifically the Computer Networking cluster at UCSC) and at this point I’m so freaking done. I’d rather be a doctor (which I have been vehemently opposed to since I knew what professions one could be) than a computer scientist at this point, and 90% of the reason is that my parents have been pushing me to go into computer science when I don’t want to. They seem to think that the only possible career path for anyone who doesn’t want to go to med school (which they don’t want me to do either because my sister’s path was so intense) is going into computer science/computer engineering–the one thing I DON’T want to do. Honestly, I’m so done with all of this. They think all of my interests are “weird” and “won’t get me anywhere,” but I’ve actually thought it out really well–not that they’d listen if I told them (I’ve tried). And then they joke about it to their friends and family when it’s actually something that I really want to do with my life and ugh.
@topaz1116 First of all, I like your new profile pic!
And I’m sorry about your parents. Honestly I say do what you want to do regarding your career and your future. Tell them that if you major in something you don’t love, you’ll end up in a profession you hate. And the only reason why you’ll be working is to earn your wages.
Do some research about the career you like. Show them the data (if it’s good). Tell them that computer science is not what you want to do. Explain to them that you’ll be going to college in a couple of years and that you really need their love, encouragement, and support.
@The5458Captain my mom sort of knows what I want to do and my plans, but I find it a lot harder to talk to my dad about most things (and he’s the one most set on me going into computers and stuff). Honestly, I have done lots of research and the median wages for everything I want to do are all higher than the median wages for a computer scientist/engineer. One of the jobs also has high projected job growth, even though fewer positions will be produced than for CS (but in the case of that job, barely anyone majors in it anyhow).
And thanks about the profile pic! My friends and I took it at a party yesterday.
