COSMOS 2015 Thread

@fusioneer98‌ Which campus did you go to? I went to UCSD.

This is kind of a silly question, but is anyone hitting the max for his/her cluster choice paragraphs? Mine are roughly 150 words out of 250 words, and I don’t know how to make them more long and detailed.

I haven’t decided my clusters yet, so I wouldn’t know. Ugh.

Tbh im not really sure which I want to do. I really wanna do some biology clusters, but I’ve heard its hard to get in. I’m probably just gonna go to UCSD.

Btw I go to a really competitive school:

My Stats:
Sophomore
UW GPA: 3.8ish, too lazy to look at my transcript
Honors/AP Courses: Chinese 4H, AP Chinese, AP Comp Sci, PreCalc H, Physics H
PSAT: 208
SAT ll Bio: 750(M I think)

ECs:

-Varsity Badminton Team for 2 years
-Math Competitions(Perfect Score on the AMC 10, AIME: 11, USAJMO qualification)
-Voluneering at WCEO Organization( about 100 hours each year so I will get Presidential Service Award)
-Participant at the Math and Science Club(2 years)
-Science Olympiad Club(1 year, got 5th place at regional competition)
-Physics Olympiad Semifinalist(I’m pretty confident I qualified…)

Do I have a good chance?

.

@dsi411‌
I went to UCSC

Does anyone know if we can submit more than 2 letters of rec?

I asked three of my teachers because one of my other programs required three letters of rec, and so I figured I would just ask them all for rec letters for all three programs I would apply to, but now I found out that University of Michigan MMSS only wants 1 letter of rec. I was wondering if I could submit more than 2 letters of rec for COSMOS.

@Stanford4lyfe shoot. Looks like I have to compete with you.

My math skills aren’t close to yours. I think you have a good chance of getting in

@Stanford4lyfe Whoa.

@Cornbread1999 I hope we all get in!

What are my chances?
Applied to UC Davis
competitive bay area school
1st choice astrophysics (cluster 4)
2nd choice quantum mechanics and nanotech (cluster 10)
current Sophomore
UW GPA 3.85
Honors math and science: Alg2 Trigonmetry H, Chemistry H, Geometry Alg 2 H, Biology H
AP- Spanish
assuming pretty strong recs,
decent essays
EC: DECA, AMC test, Chinese School, python programming,

@graykoala2017 yep, you have a decent chance

heyyyy, competitive bay area high school, Geometry/Algebra2H…that sounds familiar

Where do we send the transcripts? How to get the confirmation page if application is not completed?

What math or science ECs did you have? Because mine is weak.

Hey guys, I’m really new to the forum but I was wondering about how the chances would be for a freshman applying. I know it’s really low, but I just want to see if I have some sort of chance.

UW GPA: 4.0
Competitive High School in the Bay Area
A2H and Biology for math/science classes
EC: Leadership, piano, speech and debate, Interact, business, C++ programming. (Some of them aren’t necessarily math or science based)

Also, I’m interested in joining a cluster like Nanochemistry, but it needs Chemistry as a prerequisite and states Biology as a preference. Without taking Chem, is this cluster still an available option? Any other cluster recommendations from any campus? Thanks!

@Jinxwizard there are several Nanochem clusters; maybe try looking at another one? If they say a course is preferred, you don’t have to have taken it, but if it’s required, then you must have the course to be considered.

On another note, I think I’ve (finally) decided on my campus/clusters: UCSD Earthquake Engineering (Cluster 4) as my first choice, and Computers in Everyday Life (Cluster 1) as my second choice. My parents were slightly iffy about the fact that I wanted to do an astrophysics cluster as my first choice, so I decided against it. My mom still wants me to switch my cluster choices around, but I’m not going to.

@topaz1116 I’ve decided on my campus/clusters also! I’m applying for UCSD as well. My first choice is Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (Cluster 8) and my second choice is Computers in Everyday Life (Cluster 1), too!

I just hope my essays are strong enough.

Hey guys. I was wondering what to write for the essay. I have a fairly low GPA and not great extracirriculars so I’m kinda relying on the essay to get me in…

Also, should I put down my sport as part of my application. I am in Cross Country and Track but I’m not a varsity runner or anything special.

@katied123 Welcome to CC!

For the essay, be honest, but state how passionate you are about math and science (if you are, of course). Talk about how COSMOS would affect your future–people love that.

You can definitely put down sports on your application! If you have any academic extracurriculars, though, list those first.

Hope this helps!
