Hello! Is anyone planning to apply to COSMOS?
Hi! I might apply to COSMOS for the summer of 2016.
I’ll be applying for Biomed at UC Davis
4.0 unweighted GPA with 3 AP’s (AP BIO as one of them) this past semester, what are my chances of getting in?
@lapras96 I don’t really know your chances, since this is going to be my first year applying. But I know that the average GPA for COSMOS last year was 3.7
I’ll most likely be applying for computers of everyday life at UCSD. I take no AP’s but I do take Integrated math 2 honors(since everything was turned into common core). I don’t think I have very high chances of getting in but maybe there is slight hope…
My GPA is 4.0 unweighted and I am part of robotics and Japanese national honors society
does anyone know what the acceptance rate is for the biomed cluster at UCD?
@theCissharp Thanks for the info! I’m sure there’s hope for you!
@sarahm17 I’m not sure but I know that the classroom size for biomed at UCD is double the size of other ones; it’s 40 students instead of 20.
@lapras96 Well at least there’s that! I’m nervous about if I’ll be accepted though
Hey, all of you!
I’m a junior who actually just went to COSMOS 2015 at UCSD last summer!! I’ll give you guys some advice! What you need in order to get accepted into the program is not just great “general” stats. The really important thing is that you need to express your personal passions for the topic of whatever cluster(s) you’re applyng to in the essays. Let me elucidate a little more…
I was in UCSD Cluster 4: Earthquakes in Everyday Lives, which is a course in which we learn about structural engineering designs that withstand earthquakes. In my essay, I talked about how I used to live in Japan and lived through the big earthquake in 2011. I said that Japan’s geographically unfortunate location limits engineers to build thousands of “super-tall” skyscrapers like they can do in China and Sinagpore, and that I am eager to learn what structural engineers can do in order to combat that problem and build “up” more, since Japanese cities such as Tokyo and Osaka are really dense in population. etc…
This is just a small part of my essay in the COSMOS application, but I hope you can see the point. Talk about an article you read, a place you went to, an EC activity you participated in, or a personal experience that shows your genuine interest in the cluster you’re applying to. Don’t just say, “I’m a perfect fit for Biomedical Engineering because I took AP Bio last year”. All this shows is that you’re knowledgeable about biology; it doesn’t say that you’re necessarily interested in it. And you don’t actually HAVE to be knowledgeable about your cluster; one of my dorm-mates learned about physics for his first time “at” COSMOS. You really need to show that you won’t be bored in the lectures of your cluster, and you have to prove that your cluster fits really well with your area of interest. SHOW THAT YOU’RE A CURIOUS KID!
Even though many people at COSMOS had a 4.0 unweighted GPA, I did not (I had 3.75), and yet I still got accepted into the program, thanks to my essay So don’t feel too worried just because you don’t have the perfect GPA! While your “general” stats are important too, what makes you really stand out is your express of interest and curiosity!
P.S. COSMOS was an amazing experience! I made a lot of friends (We still have an active group-chat), my entire suite danced bollywood in the talent show (it’s on youtube lol), there were some couples, and we had awesome field trips to the beaches!!
WELL, I HOPE THIS HELPS!!! You can only do COSMOS once, so if you get in, enjoy every moment of it!! But don’t feel bad if you don’t get in either!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!!
Hi, I am planning to apply for Cosmos UCSD. I was wondering my chances of getting into COSMOS, because I need this opportunity to prepare me for the HSSRP next year :.
1st Cosmo: Computers
2nd Cosmo: Light at work
My GPA Unweighted: 4.0 , Weighted : 4.3
10th grade Sophomore
NEW October 2015 PSAT Score: 64 in English (I failed the Critical Reading), 73 in Math (silly mistakes)
Academic Extra Curriculars:
Founder and President of the 3D Modeling Club , 1 year
Secretary of the Politics Club, 1 year
Gold Pin for the President’s Volunteer Service Award (100+ hours in 8 months)
Piano, participated in the CM Branch Honors Piano Recital, my fellow cali kids will recognize the cm branch test, 9 years
Programming (idk whether i should include): my dream career, learned some of the linux shell commands and setup my 3d printer server using ssh. published only one app on the app store to help me with some chemistry calculations.
I forgot, I also took Precalculus at a local community college over the summer and I got an A, but I am unsure if I should weight it
@ichanger does piano count as an academic extracurricular? i thought i shouldn’t put it because it’s not very academic, is it, what do you think?
also, just by looking at your academic scores you have solid grades so you probably have a very good chance at getting into ucsd
and you should put programming down! its academic and it seems like a big passion of yours it would look nice on your app
Thanks! I think Piano may be academic, but I can’t really think of any more activities and after all, I did receive technically an award for it so it should be pretty decent. I know there could’ve been better activities, but I don’t know any more activities that I have completed. If you received any special honor for anything even if it seems silly, I would definitely put it down, as it shows you do have a passion for it.
Hey y’all, hope I’m not late for the party first post and everything lol
Does anyone who went to cosmos before have any advice on essays? That would help threefold, thanks
Bump
what do you guys do in computer in everyday lives?
