@marvelousmarvel thanks for letting me know. I also heard from my counselor that as a freshman there is more of a challenge to get in due to the priority of juniors first. I look forward to applying again next year!
is cosmos more research-focused or coursework-focused? i canāt quite tell from the information they have on their website.
One of my friends attended cosmos last summer, and he said it was more coursework-focused. I think he did the chemistry cluster at uc davis. I donāt think the environment is quite the same as some of the more research-oriented programs, such as RSI, Simons, and Garcia. However, based on what others have said, it does seem like a good summer program that you can build off of later.
@cloudslicer thanks!
what are my chances of getting off the waitlist at ucsd cluster 3 (living oceans and climate change)?
@tiger17 COSMOS is a mix of research and coursework. You take college level classes (my professor said much of the content he taught was coursework that only upperclassmen and even graduate students learn), but you also complete a research project. Some clusters are most research based than others.
@bex3109 no one can really answer that. Checking last yearās thread could maybe give some insight as to if people have been accepted off the waitlist before. If youāre an underclassmen, definitely try again next year. Make a backup plan for the summer (community college course, job, etc), and good luck!
@astronomy21 @noodlewater I got accepted to cluster 4 at UCD too?
I got into ucsc nano chem cluster!
@noodlewater congrats to you as well! @applesauce4716 We should start a chat with some other Davis people
@ichen21 I also got into ucsc nano chem cluster! See ya there!
me too!
Got into UC Davis C10! Anyone else?
@tiger17 I attended COSMOS last summer (the cluster about quantum mechanics, graphene, and waves at UCSC), and it skewed on the coursework side. I had classes from university professors M-F, from 9-12 and 1-4. Also, thereās a final project where my groupmembers and I researched a topic of interest about graphene. I remember that we went to the professorās lab once and made graphene from graphite.
In general, I think that it depends on what cluster youāre going to; if itās more technical, like nanochemistry or robotics, expect more labs. If itās a marine biology-type cluster, then expect more field trips.
@astronomy21 yes! But I donāt know how to do thatā¦ can you?
Anyone want to make a UCSC Cluster 9 chat? Or UCSC chat in general?
My D was admitted to UCD cluster 6 (Mathematics). For any UCD Cosmos alums: the handout and schedule shows Sundays as unscheduled and family can visit. The handbook says they prefer students stay on campus. Is that true or do students actually leave campus for the day? We live 45 min from UCD so thought D might want to come home for the day, or at least get off campus for a while.
Congratulations, everyone! I attended COSMOS UCSC last summer and it was by far the best 4 weeks of my life. Enter COSMOS with an open mind and an open heart ā the people you meet are truly special. I still talk to my COSMOS friends everyday!!
^^ Iād really like to know about parental visits as well!
@PamelaP @marvelousmarvel I donāt know the specifics of other campuses, but at Davis, parents are welcome to visit on Sundays. Itās not difficult to do at all. My relatives came one Sunday, and we went out to lunch together. I just let my cluster RA/TI know the day before at nightly announcements, and I signed out the next day. Itās not uncommon for people to go home for a bit. Make sure you coordinate in advance, and stay flexible, as your daughter might decide on the day of that she and her new friends want to spend the day exploring campus or the town of Davis instead.
@phaseshift Thanks for the info!
