COSMOS 2019

@SanMega yes, I believe there are two separate buildings for girls and boys

For past experiences, what are the essentials to bring?

@jopan1234 if you google ā€œucsd cosmos handbook 2017 pdfā€ then you should see the first link as the handbook from 2017. page 6 has a list to pack

Also did anyone make that chat for ucsc?

just curiousā€¦ how many of you are planning not to attend?

When is the UCSC roommate survey due

Anyone here got into UCI Cluster 2? I got accepted and was curious to see what topics interest yā€™all (: Super excited!!

Iā€™m conflicted whether I should do cosmos at UC Davis IoT or SSP at nmt. I feel like cosmos relates more to what I want to study in college (eecs) but SSP seems really interesting to me because Iā€™ve never done research and I like astronomy as wellā€¦

@sublimekorean it would probably be more helpful to do something related to your major

@sublimekorean take this with a grain of salt, but I feel like not everything you do in high school has to relate to your intended major (although different colleges also look for different things). Iā€™m not familiar with SSP, but I just skimmed through their website, and I think you could probably still tie that into eecs since the research still incorporates some cs, and it could give colleges an idea of what type of research you might be interested in using your expertise in cs for (?)

@sublimekorean Both programs are well-run and interesting, but if you want to study eecs in college, COSMOS would give you the opportunity to see what itā€™s really like to major in eecs. I would not pass up that opportunity, as you could find that itā€™s not your cup of tea (which would save you from having to switch majors in college, which can be difficult depending on where you go) or you could solidify your interest in the subject.
Youā€™re going to have a great experience at either one, but if eecs is what you want to pursue in life, I canā€™t think of any reason not to immerse yourself in it for a summer.

@frankentea Do you mind sharing your stats. I applied to this cluster but did not get in.

@abcschool @bex3109 @phaseshift thank you for the feedback!

@sublimekorean I would go with SSP if you want to aim for Ivies/Top 20 schools. COSMOS is more impressive if you plan on attending a UC for college.

SSP is pretty CS heavy too and will give you research and algorithm oriented experience. I think this is a bit more valuable because programming algorithms is an important aspect of undergrad study and will give you skills that you can implement in ML.

That being said, another thing is to compare the costs of the two programs. SSP is around $2,000 more expensive than COSMOS (if I remember correctly), and while you will get more hands-on experience, thatā€™s a large amount of money for a mere summer program.

@sublimekorean I think SSP has a better reach. I mean there are more and better colleges that give importance to SSP. COSMOS is California UC specific and somewhat limits your appeal. In addition, I personally think that applied science (like in astronomy) and research are more impressive than just taking university level coursework

@marvelousmarvel @bcwarrior Thank you, I decided to go to SSP!

Did anyone on UCI waitlist get admitted yet?

^^ same but for UCSD waitlist?

Did not find any roommate survey for UCD. Is it available for only few campuses?

Interesting data on the COSMOS program thru 2015. Overall acceptance 39%.
