I personally attended COSMOS this past summer and I had a blast. I learned a lot! Biomedical Sciences. Who gets to see an animal necropsy during high school? Who gets to stick their hands inside a fistulated cow's stomach? I did! And Im just a senior in HS. Plus, all UCs give you an extra 5 points on your app if you write "COSMOS Participant" somewhere. They told us during orientation. Have questions? Post here or message me. =]]

Definitely second that... Im a senior now too and it was THE best experience of my high school experience.. maybe my life.. learned so much not only academically but personally and lot of life lessons..
it made 08 the best summer.

which uc campus did u guys attend

UCI

judging from cisco's cluster description probably UCD

I went to UCI COSMOS summer '07. My cluster was not my favorite one (materials science), but I had a blast nonetheless.

Hey everyone, I'm thinking of applying to COSMOS, is it extremely selective?

no..it's pretty easy to get into.

I did attend UCD.
Cluster 7
Biomedical Sciences
Seriously, go there!
UCD is the best of the three
I had friends go to UCI and UCSC the same year
And my experience was greater.
Attendddddddd!
Applyyyyyyyyy!
It is the best thing you can do.

Let me know what you apply to.
I'd like to know.
I can share insights and charms if you go to UCD.
Im applying again, but can't apply to UCD.

=[[

Ah, I'm probably going to apply to UC Irvine. The problem is I'm a US citizen but an international student at the moment, so I'm not sure if that will ruin my chances or not :( Do they tend to let more California residents in??

^what grade are you in?
because I got in summer after freshman year with only mediocre stats. (well, I got straight A's, but that was pretty much it)

I'm a current sophomore/rising junior. And I see you live on the West Coast? Were there a lot of people there who weren't from California? :)

I had straight A's in my sophomore year. including AP Bio with a 5 on the AP test and a 760 on the SAT II's but i have a C in AP chem this year along with a B+ in Honors Precal (I'm a junior) Do you think this will hurt my chances? Is it a smart idea to apply to a less selective campus?

Ok I don't understand why you guys think this program is competitive at all.

Um most were from California I believe.
So yea, as long as you have decent grades (4.0 gpa) decent test scores, you are set.
Personally, I don't think this program is that selective. You attend university level classes and do a final research project with your team. It doesn't require a lot of thinking, just a lot of work. I remember messing around for 6 hours every day doing random stuff and having fun. So, the best part about it is that it is really really fun and you get to meet a lot of cool students/RA's.

Said WHO that it isn't competitive?
Hello....STATE summer school for CA
only the best of the state make it
well, the best that apply
I mean, it really depends on where you apply
here is the order of competitiveness:

UCD (MOST IMPACTED....especially C-Sev!)

UCI

UCSC

UCSD

So....apply to whichever you want.
The only thing they see is your academics, extra curriculars, and of course, letters of recs. No essays are required. So, everything depends on your academics.
Excel!

Apply.
=D

hmm. wow. didn't know it was that competitive. it was really really fun, that's all i know. but maybe my cluster wasn't that interesting..

It might not seem super competitive on a "CC forum scale" but believe me it is extremely competitive.. it mostly has to do with which cluster you apply to because there are some who get as many as 400 apps for 20-30 spots.

dont base it too much on your overall gpa because it is mostly your science and/or math courses that they take into account (not to say that the others dont matter). Test scores of course have no effect and are not even considered because there are kids 8-11th grades applying most of which have not taken them yet.
somebody mentioned something about essay not required.. NOT true. even tho they are samll short answer essay, I think they are the highest weighted out of all. I heard alot of ppl who thought they were in cuz they had good stats, but they were denied because essays sucked. You need to sound PASSIONATE about all the clusters you apply to. The professors are the ones who read them and they make the final decision.
EC are also highly important, especially academic activities.
I dont think Recs make a big difference.

I did not meet anyone from out of state. I do know that there was a pre-documented kid tho.
charizarrd where u frm?

cisco_hernan LOL your experience was soooo not greater haha jk
(plus it was freaking hot at davis last year and wasnt there lik fires or something?)
I am curious to know who it was that you know that went to UCI tho... PM me?

UCI is bomb-digity LOL

haha wow, my app was down the ****hole. it was so bad, i wrote like a 4th grader. i had no idea how i got in, but it was really fun, prob the most exciting experience of my life so far (hopefully more to come this summer)

short responses are easy
"why do you want to attend this cluster" blah blah blah
so its not that bad

hmmm UCD was awesome
it was only extremely hot the first week
and we had AC everywhere
when we went to class...that first week every cluster got buses to take them to class
and also during the fires...those were a little far away, but when it was smokey outside...we used the buses

hmmm two of my friends went to UCI last year
fernando and frank
they had fun

i just think i had WAY more fun than them
=D

haha buses?? it took about 10 min. to get to and from each class. we messed around a lot. by last year, u mean summer '08? i went summer '07, before sophomore year. UCI was fun. there were soooo many asians though. not exactly the place i would want to go for college. we did a lot of stuff. guitar hero, poker, music, talent show, cluster stuff, rec room, bball, etc. I wasn't as "nerdy" as some other people there though. our research project was really really ***** but somehow we had one of the best ones...
also it was not hot at all. really cool compared to where I live.
again, I emphasize- lots of asians. and shops. professors were really nice.
if anyone has any specific questions just post on here, ill be glad to answer as honestly as possible

arigarnica: I'm from China, haha, I know, I probably won't get in cause of the whole California resident factor... oh well, thought I'd try anyway :)

Gah I'm just super worried about "sounding passionate" in my essays now...
