Cosmos

hi there

i have heard of this program called COSMOS at either ucsc uci ucd or ucsd its a program for math/science and looks very interesting. Its during the summer and lasts for 4 weeks. heres the link COSMOS
please tell me what you think about it.

thanks!

its a pretty good program quality wise, if you get in
i hear some people say its not that prestigious

cyberchondriac, how hard do you think it is to get into this program?

Depends on what cluster.

UC Davis is relatively hard to get into for obvious reasons.

Are the UC Davis Physics/optics, Astronomy, or Engineering Mechanics clusters hard to get into? Or do most people apply for biology/chemistry clusters?

Here are last year’s clusters and the number of applicants to each cluster. These info was available on the COSMOS web site last year and I copied them down. I don’t remember how many applicants each cluster accepted (maybe ~20-30). Based on the info, some clusters are much harder to get into than others.

whats the liklihood of getting into ucsc if your GPA is between 3.0-3.5?

BusyMei, that is really useful data! Thank you for sharing the information.

Does anyone know the average number of people accepted per cluster?

somewhere around 20 mac

I went to COSMOS at UCD last year as a sophomore. I was in the Biotechnology cluster. Selectivity-wise, Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences receive the most applicants, with Biomedical Sciences receiving about twice as many as Biotech, but BS admits twice as many applicants. Most clusters have approximately 20ish; mine had 18. BS has about 40ish. You have two RA’s and live in a 5 or 4 person suite.

Depending on whichever cluster you apply to, it may or may not be very hard to get it. This was exactly what I was looking for last summer. I just wanted an introduction into research and labwork at a college level; COSMOS does not have a lot of intensive research, but you do do a lot of labwork and COSMOS participants create a researchable question and a final presentation throughout the four weeks.

The Davis campus was extremely fun. With a gym and several other athletic facilities within bike riding distance, as well as downtown and other Davis locations, it was never boring. The COSMOS RAs also host activities every single night; every Saturday you take a trip to an amusement location - I went to Sunsplash Park, Discovery Kingdom, and San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf. On the weekends, if parents live nearby, you can leave, but I did not feel very homesick or anything. This was an extremely enjoyable program.

Thanks for the information! It sounds like a great program! Would you say you had lots of math ecs on your application? Cause I don’t and I’m hoping that doesn’t hurt me too much.

so what’s the financial aid like? my parents aren’t letting me apply b/c of the high costs…
if your gross income is ~$140,000 would you get any aid?

the OOS tuition rate is rediculous

idk 140,000 a year isnt to shabby i dont think that qualifies for financial aid, but you could apply for partial financial aid

thx for info delosh, @delosh8 how many ecs did you have an what types?

COSMOS is amazing. Basically went twice haha.

I’m applying to the Biotech cluster this year. Did you have a gpa higher than 3.7? I usually get all As, but I had a really bad math teacher this year and I got my first D bringing my gpa down. I’m really worried that this will ruin my chances of getting in. If you don’t mind telling me, what was the cluster like? Thanks!

@ emilystahhr

yeah dont worry about that, they say average GPA is 3.5 yours is above that. also my GPA is only 3.1 and i believe i have a good chance, good luck

does anyone know that when they say everyone will be notified by may 1st, whether or not they mean that they send out all notifications may 1, or if they send out notifications throughout april?
