Cost and Commitments within Fraternity

My son has spoken about joining a fraternity. He will be living in the dorm with a meal plan, that is how his scholarship works. He does not want to work while pursuing his undergraduate engineering degree and has choosen to save our financial support for graduate school.

But, he has spoken about joining a fraternity at his school with a lot of other engineering majors.

From reading a little online, it seems like it is taboo to ask about expenses until after the pledge is over and an invitation to join is extended.

So, my questions are:
About how much to join a run of the mill fraternity? Dues, initiation fees, etc?
How much time would be required?
Is it wrong for him to just drop by with a list of questions?
Thanks

Depends on the school.

Depends on the school and the fraternity.

I have this mental image of you sending him with a list of questions to the frat house in the middle of the day. Don’t do that. lol The appropriate time to ask most questions like cost is after the rush period (before the pledging period), after he has received a bid.

Often the IFC/ Greek office at the school should be able to answer general questions about average fraternity cost or even individual chapter dues. Like aigiqinf said, it depends on the chapter and school.

Thanks. We have no fraternity background, so all this is mysterious to us.
