I read somewhere that a cost for a cadet to attend Westpoint is about $300,000. What makes up that value?

WP is free, the only cost is a initial deposit of about $2,000(correct me if im wrong on the amount). The only thing you have to pay back is an 8 year commitment, 5 years active duty, 3 reserve

flyers boy- i think he meant the cost to put a cadet through four years at west point. And ive heard as high as $400,000

From what I’ve heard, the ‘cost’ is in the $325,000-375,000 range. This is basically the cost to keep everything running here…mess hall staff, grounds and maintenance (which is a crapload of money on the Plain) here and at Buckner, all our training equipment, facilities, etc. Then, that number is divided by number of Cadets to get the $ per Cadet value for scholarship presentations and such.

If you end up paying back tuition instead of commissioning, you are only responsible for paying tuition fees ($90,000-120,000 range plus whatever uniforms, etc you already bought).

And yes, the deposit is around $3,000 to come here. And it is not necessary to pay any or all of it up front. If you can’t afford it, they’ll just deduct it out of your paycheck for the next four years.

Opps sorry, must have misread. thanks NCRC4 for the correction

Numbers reported by Admissions recently claim in excess of $400,000. This is consistent with stats that I’ve seen over the last few years ranging from $400,000 to $450,000. I’ve searched for GAO (U.S. Government Accountability Office) reports that would verify this, but have turned up nothing but prep school costs so far.

This year’s deposit is $2,000.

Can I get $900 back? ;)

Probably not, but perhaps your cadet can!

:-)

We can kiss that $$ goodbye…we’ll see it again, just like the travel reimbursement =)
