Hi there. My son is now making a decision between Loyola and a more local public university. I definitely believe in the "development of the whole person" as part of a college education and I understand that we will not get this at a public university. But the difference in cost between the two schools is quite a shock (20K vs. 45K). And, we just noticed that the 45K does not include board, that students need to fund a sort of debit card. My son will most likely skip breakfast and eat hearty at other meals. I am guessing $100+ per week? Can anyone comment on this? Thanks in advance for your help.

most other colleges that have meals plans that I have been looking at list the cost at between $4000-$4500 for the year if that helps

Assuming the costs of room and board at Loyola are approximately equal to those at Johns Hopkins University, then the cost of board at Loyola would be about $4,000/year

My D will be going there.

check out their web site under campus life/campus services/dining services/payment options (click on the picture)

It states that there are 105 dining days per semester and the average is $1,500 -$1,800 per semester. that averages $14-17 / per day.

If you don't use it all up, it transfers to the next semester.

The other schools seemed to come to about $7.50 / per meal which is alot if you don't eat much for breakfast or don't eat anything at all.

We are going this weekend and I plan on checking out the prices.

At first I was concerned about this until I did the math. now I think it is a better way because it will also teach my D about budgeting her food funds.

My daughter is a sophomore there and there is no way I am spending $4,000 a year on food. The previous estimate is about right. If she skips a meal she doesn't pay for it like most meal plans do.

I paid $1,500 to $2,000 last year for the whole year if I can remember.
