I have been thinking of attending Texas A&M College of engineering and I was just wondering how much it costs per year to go to the school. I know that the average cost of attendance is $27,452 for in-state residents, but does it cost more or less than $27k for engineering majors?
The major doesn’t necessarily cost more.
Factored into that number is personal and travel expenses. Not everyone has the same expenses.
My son is in engineering and his cost the past two years, (tuition, room/board, books, sports pass (parking only 1st year) was roughly 21K. That includes no club/organization costs, eating out, incidentals, or living allowance. He works full time in summers, so he takes care of his living allowance and budgets accordingly.
There are club/organization costs
Gas to come home and go back
Eating out (some on campus eateries have free food at closing)
So,while you have one set of expenses billed by university, there are other costs and it could creep up a few thousand more in what you decide/need to spend money on.
Here is the tuition calculator for A&M

The cost does vary a bit by major and engineering is slightly higher than some other majors, I’m not sure what was used to calculate the $27k though. But the cost of attendance numbers factor in so many variables that you do have control over, like where you live, what you do for meals, how much transportation to and from school is going to cost.
We’ve also been looking at the COA and found something about “differential tuition” for engineering students. Here’s a link to the page:

Here’s a link to the tuition calculator:

Edit: This appears in-line with other colleges. I think they all charge a bit more for engineering to help cover lab and equipment costs. I see rosegeo posted the tuition calc first - use it to see the different college costs.
There are many fees assoc with the “tuition”. I think I calculated $1300 worth for fall. I will have to log in to look at the itemized billing. I tried to post it once, without identifying info, but CC didn’t like it.
I don’t know how they calculate the different majors. I need to go log in to see the itemization. This spring for engineering was over 6K. No dorm, meal plan, parking pass. 5 classes and fees.
This is a handy link to have! Thank You @rosegeo I have not ever seen this before.
I only spent 19k my first year even though the estimated was $26k and change. That was tuition, housing, books, school fees (Rec and clinic), and sports pass.
When does the sports pass go on sale? I couldn’t find a date. Thanks
Is your son in the corps (cause that has a lot of extra costs).
@chercheur Here is the info on sports passes for the upcoming year. https://students.12thmanfoundation.com/students/login.aspx. Looks like incoming freshman have to wait until May 30,
Thanks @Evon1254 - I don’t know how we missed it! One more question - do you know if you have to create a separate account to buy the tickets? For some reason, my student’s TAMU email is still not working. We tried logging in with the UIN but that didn’t work either.
@chercheur I’m not sure. I couldn’t login with mine either. It’s probably like parking and will open up closer to May 30th.
Thanks for trying @Evon1254. We were able to register for on-campus parking yesterday. I think it’s the NSC parking pass that you need to wait until May 1st to purchase.
If you need a parking permit for this fall/spring, go here (https://transport2.tamu.edu/account/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2faccount) and register which will put you in line to get a pass. There is a map you can click on to see which parking is nearest your housing. You can select up to 6 possible parking lots, but we only selected 3 as we really couldn’t tell where some of the other lots were. You will need your license plate number to register.
