I'm wondering what the cost of attending CU is for kids from out of town, who need dorm or apartment and food of some kind.
Thanks
PS

Hi ParentSparkle,

The largest cost for a Cooper student is housing. Dorming is typically about $9,000 for a year and mainly freshmen dorm. However, if your student becomes an RA, he/she can stay in the dorms until graduation and the cost for dorming will be free or significantly discounted (depending on the plan chosen).
When your son or daughter moves out of the dorms for sophomore year, the cost will typically be about $1000/month for rent. It may be more or less, depending on living arrangements. I’ve heard of as little as $600 and as much as $1500, but this is something you can discuss and set a limit for. Stuyvesant Town, a nearby apartment complex, costs $4000/month for a two bedroom apartment. This is a very large apartment and can be split up into up to 3 separate bedrooms. Students usually split these apartments among 3-4 people.
It is also important to note that you may sublet the room or apartment over the summer to save on costs.

As for transportation, the cost is close to nothing if your son or daughter chooses to walk from the apartment to school (which is what most people do).

For books and supplies, I would grant about $1000 per year. This cost would be significantly higher for architecture/art students. Sadly, I am not familiar with the cost of art supplies.

Food depends on whether your student chooses to cook or to buy food. If order, the cost would be about $15-$30 a day (From student lounge - breakfast: $3, lunch: $5, dinner: $5 = $13. Outside: ~$8/meal = $24.) I would allocate about $5000 for this, a very rough estimate.
I both cook and buy food and my parents give me $100 per week for food, clothing, and miscellaneous expenses (~$4000 for the school year). This is usually more than enough for me.

Student fees are approximately $2000.

Breakdown:
Student fee: $2000
Housing: $9000 ($1000/month, Sept-May = 9 months)
Books/supplies: $1000
Food: $5000
Total: $17,000

I must warn you that this is a very rough estimate and will vary based on lifestyle. My parents have paid anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 for a year. I would say the range is approximately $10,000 to $20,000 for an engineering student.
