I wanted to know how much it is going to cost approx. for one year at MSU. I will be a freshman this fall and I needed to know how much I should be saving.

$300 if you buy online, $500 if you buy used from the book store.

wow is that really all it cost for both semesters? cuz the website told me something like 900 for the whole year

Hmm… it highly depends on your major. Mine cost me less than $100 total (humanities major) but I have friends who spend $800+ per semester on books (usually science majors).

Highly, HIGHLY recommend looking online. You can easily save half of the cost of even used books.

Best of luck :)

Oh, sorry, those estimates were for one semester. I am a science major so it’s highly recommended that I buy all of my books. However, I know people who don’t buy books for some of their classes. It really just depends- talk to your professors and see if they actually recommend buying the book(s).

buy them used from amazon as early as you can and save 60% - 70%…

Also, don’t buy recommended books unless you’re really struggling with the class. I don’t know anyone who has found them helpful.

Look on Craigslist too. I’ve found cheap books on there.

To elaborate on ps’s comment- look on allmsu.com too. They often tell you whether a professor or class will use a book. Don’t take it for 100% truth but it’s often a good indicator if you’re on the fence.

awesome! so i should basically save up about 1000 bucks for books and see where it takes me! oh and do we sign up for classes and such on our AOP date thingy?

Yep, you sign up for classes at AOP.

one more question…im living in case hall this fall and where is the best place to stock up on necessities close by. Such as like shampoo and all the little things

There are little stores in the dorms that carry that stuff but there is also many stores you can get to by CATA bus.

The closest place is goodrich’s. It is about a ~10 minute walk. Or I personally always go to CVS pharmacy, ~20 minute walk. Meijer is a bit further away, 15 min. walk to the bus stop and then 15 min bus ride. If you really need something ie snacks/bandaids/cold medicine right away there’s always Sparty’s (convenience store) that is located in the lobby of south case hall. It’s pretty convenient and just a bit more expensive than other grocery stores
