cost of living in Ann Arbor

hey guys,

I'm a newly admitted international student for this coming winter term, and I was wondering, how much is the cost of living in Ann Arbor per month? (including accommodation, food, and other possible extra expenses)

it's because I'm going there under a sponsorship, and I'm only getting $835 per month. will that be sufficient to survive in UMich? planning to stay on campus, but I'm only going there as a transfer, and if I'm not mistaken, most on campus housing is reserved for freshman right? so it's not confirmed yet where I will be staying.

and how cold is Michigan during winter? I'm from Malaysia, and I've never experienced any harsh cold weather yet, so some helpful advices will definitely be appreciated.

thank you, can't wait to be part of UMich! :)

$835 will be tough if you are staying on campus. Here are rates for housing: UM Undergraduate Housing - Housing Rate Information . The dorms are expensive, you might want to look into Northwood.

I live in a house off-campus...it costs me $540/month+utilities...so maybe up to $640 tops. You can probably sublet from someone for less...or you can look into a co-op. That leaves you money for food too.

Michigan gets pretty cold, you are going to want a real winter jacket, hat, gloves, long pants, long shirts, etc.
