About how much cheaper is it to live off campus than on campus? Is it practical to live off campus without a car?

You can live off campus w/o a car more easily if you live very close to campus…so you can walk if the shuttles aren’t running on weekends, etc.

My son will be paying <$600/month for a 12 month lease or about $7200 vs $8800 for a suite style dorm for the school year.

The price includes his own bedroom and own bathroom, a fully furnished unit (with washer and dryer so no paying $5/week for laundry), and all utilities including cable and internet.

As this is his first time off campus not certain how much food will cost. I’m definitely hoping that it won’t be more than the $3000 for the freshman meal plan and hoping food will also result in some savings. He can (and actually enjoys) cooking for himself, so won’t need to pay for a lot of meals out.

Also if he renews his lease, he’ll be able to leave his stuff in his apartment over the summer and won’t have to worry about a storage facility or the time/trouble of moving stuff back home. (If he doesn’t renew the lease ends at the beginning of August so they have time to clean apartments and check for damages, so there may be a gap before a new lease would begin).
