Can any parents (or students, for that matter) testify about what differences, if any, exist between the cost of a regular term attendance versus studying abroad? Any relevant general information about this topic would also be helpful, specifically as it relates to the process by which one goes about setting in motion such plans. I'm a junior-level transfer who may spend a third year at D to finish a double major that includes an engineering degree, and I would ideally love to study abroad twice while still including an internship or two.

And an addendum if that’s okay: does cost of studying abroad tend to be prohibitive to financial-aid receiving students?

To answer limetime’s question…
My son got more aid both in terms of grant and loan to make the FSP possible. The ratio of grant and loan is kind of proportional to his comprehensive FA. The amounts are somewhere between significant and insignificant, say around 2,500 in total (grant + loan), in my son’s case. Hope that helps,

Like kvn’s son, my D’s grant and small loan cover the full cost of associated with her study abroad (room, board and airfare). D spent her money when it came to incidentals and it did not help that she went abroad at a time where the US $ was in the dumps, so there was a bit of $$ when it came to eating out and visiting griends. Overall it was an amazing experience for her, she went at the same time as her friends so they traveled to visit each other from location to location.

In terms of regular cost versus abroad, it depends on where you are going. Some places are more expensive than a regular term at Dartmouth (ie. London, Paris) while others are a bit cheaper (ie. Mexico). You still get your regular loans, grants and scholarships applied, but for those who do work study it becomes a loan. However, work study is basically spending money so you don’t have to do it either way.
