We went to Costa Rica several years ago. Our DS was about 12 and we went for almost a month. Osa peninsula was the highlight of the trip. We hiked out to the ranger station (and back) and spent 2-3 nights. If you are going to do that I would say go for it, but otherwise Costa Rica was not that impressive, but we have travelled and seen quite a few places. It seemed a bit overpriced and the food was mainly variations of rice and beans for $8 a plate…Arenal would have been great when the volcano was active but at this stage it seems pointless to go (except the volcano is impressive to view). Manuel Antonio was not bad.
Not hijacking. It was a Costa Rica rainy season thread. It’s my same request. Perhaps others can use the info provided as well. Thx
When we were in San Gerardo de Dota (Savegre) we ate a lot of trout. They have a trout farming operation nearby and every restaurant in that valley served variations. We learned to say, “Yo como trucha. Yo como mucha trucha. Yo como trucha hoy.” LOL. The food was also bland compared to Mexican food. Plato del dia – today’s plate – rice, beans, salad, and trout. Tasty though.
We were there in the “green” season although July. The rain was tropical – warm and most often just one downpour a day in the afternoon.
In late May 2016 we went to the Westin Playa Conchal (Costa Rica All-Inclusive Family Resort | The Westin Reserva Conchal). My husband played golf every morning and there was no one but him and the coatimundis. The food was basic cruise-ship, mass feeding-and-watering stuff, but we stayed in the “Royal Beach Club” section and had a private pool, bar, and evening hors d’oeuvres. It was very pleasant and a good value for the money. It was rainy season and every day about 4 p.m., there was a downpour for about an hour. However, it was very predictable and did not impact our enjoyment of the outdoors.
Well then, where were you impressed? I would like to stay within a reasonable plane trip. We have been to Argentina and loved it but it is a looong plane ride.
We spent 7 weeks in Argentina in Dec/Jan and really enjoyed it. Buenos Aires seemed a bit rundown but after spending time there it really grew on us. Some of our favorites have been Portugal, Spain, Thailand and Croatia. Slovenia is supposed to be quite nice but we have not made it there yet.
Wife prefers cities, whereas I am happy in either nature or city. We seldom stay in luxury hotels, etc as we prefer to spend little time in the hotel.
Osa peninsula is definitely worth doing though, it was certainly impressive if you like nature…probably one of the top places anywhere but I am not sure it would be much fun in the rainy season. November in Europe is nice.
