How do in state and out of state tuition work? I’m fairly confident that I will be accepted, but I’m from New York so the biggest factor swaying me to move across the country would be pricing. Is it true that you change to in state tuition after only one year of paying oos tuition?
No, it’s not.
No, that is not true.
If you are coming to California for educational purposes, you will pay full fees for all 4 years.
It is very, very difficult to become a resident for California tuition.

Additionally, the following is notable:
The UC’s and CSU’s are California public universities supported by California taxpayers. OOS students pay full fees for 4 years and do not receive ANY financial aid because the State does not have the money. So your fees will be
$60K per year x 4 year= $240K.
You will pay out of state tuition all four years and will receive no financial aid (prohibited by state legislation.)
You can borrow 5.5k for your first year and a maximum of 27k for all of undergraduate studies.
So, if your parents don’t have 240k in a college fund, you can’t attend.
Unless you get married with a California resident.
^^ Even then, you are not guaranteed a full ride.^^
Even then, costs are about half of OOS, far from full tuition or full ride, but at least manageable.
But you’d have to get married and then wait 12 months to register at the university right? Or is it immediate if you’re married to a CA resident?
I think you still have to wait 12 months after the marriage. Or, if you are 24 or above, after moving here one year, file the state tax and all that. Or, if you are under 24, but financially independent, meaning that your parents “abandoned” you, your parents are not living in the states, you are filing taxes independently for at least 3 years, then after moving here one year, you file CA tax for that year, you will be considered CA resident.
