wow everything seems to be expensive at mcgill...

i personally plan on calling home using skype (internet telephone)...i already have a cell phone..i guess i need to get the card or wateva from montreal

what's skype and how do you get one? Is it free? I think I'm going to try out a landline for a couple of months and see how it goes. I already have a cellphone and I'm on a contract for another two years or so, but it's only got about 150 daytime minutes.

Skype is free, yes... go to skype.com I believe ( I could be wrong though....if so, google should help you). Its an online voice communication program that works via your computer. You need a microphone, and preferably a headset to use it propperly though. It works, though i personaly have never been able to figure our how on my computers. My systems a little out of whack though, so it would likely work fine on yours.
You might want to look into the Vonnage service too, which although its not free, I hear it is quite marvelous and allows long distance at local-call rates. I dont know the coverage in Canada, but I do know that it works in the area between Montreal and Toronto if thats any help.

I went with the cell personaly, and canceled\postponed my American cell phone......but then again, I dont live in res. I figured I was never home enough to merrit a land line............for cell plans, the company "fido", is quite student-friendly, and since they merged with Rodgers\At&t, they have great reception in pretty much everywhere but the metro. (no service works in the metro as far as I know!). I highly reccomend them, though their phones aren't the greatest. Their plans and service are though!

:)
-T

there is service in the metro actually between m

actualy yeah, come to think of it... it works at mcgill college sometimes too... but it doesnt work in the tunnels, just in the station\mall\plazza, ....at least thats my phone.

there is cell phone reception in the downtown stations..

do NOT get a landline from mcgill residences. it's not worth your money unless you have a LOT of local numbers that you call when ur in ur room (like at night...when ur finally in your room...talking to a friend in montreal). the long distance charges are crazy, and if your using a phone card then u can just be using a pay phone anyways.

i'd recommend getting a fido cell phone. i heard about fido from some other friends in canada before i went over and got all of my friends and almost everyone on my rez floor (who were getting montreal cell phones, of course, i didn't force anyone haha) to get fido and the unlimited fido-to-fido plan has meant that i've spent around 1000 minutes each month and hardly any of my calls are to non fido users.

I second that.... I use fido, and its great!

can plz u explain this fido thing further...like monthly cost etc..

the unlimited fido to fido thing means that your friends also have to use fido...do most people in mcgill use this?

www.fido.ca

basically, if the person you call is using a fido cell phone as well, the company will not deduct any of your normal calling minutes or charge any SMSes sent between you two.

most people i know use it, and you can even get a special discount if you register ur ISIC card (intl student identity card, you can register for that at the travel agency in shatner/ssmu) with http://www.studentphonestore.com/

some of my friends in Montreal were saying that Rogers has better service and reception though. They also have unlimited rogers to rogers calling. My plan has free evenings starting at 6 and free weekends. I'm planning on making most of my calls at night, so I think a cell phone will be enough too.

Rogers\att and fido merged. They are the same company now, thus they receive signal from both towers. Thats partialy why theyre the best deal now. They'll all under the microcell blanket i believe.

rogers bought fido, but you don't get rogers-fido or vice versa free under any of their plans.

fido is just more common among uni kids because of their cheaper plans/phones in general.
