Costume Design

I am aspiring to be a costume designer and I would ideally LOVE to work on costume design for movies. I'm not sure whether I should look into a Fashion Design or Theatre Design/Production... I don't know which path would help me the most to score my dream job. If anyone is in school already to be a costume designer, knows of any good schools/programs, or has any tips for me that'd be great!!!

Check out the University of Evansville:

Fashion design will not be as good of a major as you may think for costume design.
Definitely look into Theater Design and Production, as they're bound to have classes in costume design, and because of their department they're bound to have more connections with film and theater industries.

Fashion design(and school that offer this) primarily will lead you to a path of fashion design.

I believe Cal Arts in Cali which is one of the best art schools in the country offer Costume as a major.
Also look into strong FILM school programs, ie USC and NYU.

Some schools to possibly check into are NYU, Syracuse, Boston University, Emerson, Ithaca, Arizona, Cincinnati and Suny Purchase.

According to Wikipedia, Julie Taymor (Lion King) graduated from Oberlin College with a major in mythology and folklore. Good luck with your search!

Julie Taymor, although she did co-design the costumes for The Lion King--which she also directed--is a director and puppeteer with vast and varied experience. She is not a costume designer, per se. Although Taymor's background is fascinating and would be a great thing to emulate, it would not be the way to start working as a costume designer. :)

You might want to check with the Designers Guild website for guidance and possibly someone to chat with. Because ultimately, its not about where you get your degree, but how to get into the guild. Costume Designers Guild Local IA 892 - Home
My H is a set costumer, is in Local 705 the costumers union as opposed to the designers guild.

SUNY Purchase is outstanding; also look at North Carolina School of the Arts and Carnegie Mellon University.
