Looking for colleges with costume design degree. Would also appreciated any advice on this area of study, how plentiful are jobs in this area and can you make enough money to live and pay back your student loans?

Yale school of drama has a design (set and costume) degree but it’s a graduate program. I believe you can also at least take courses in design (again set and costume) at Northwestern, which has a very good theater/drama program.

There are many schools in the US where you can study Theatre and Costume Design.

Try posting your question on the Theatre/ Drama Majors Thread as well. – [Theater/Drama Majors - College Confidential](Theater/Drama Majors - College Confidential Forums)

In reference to your second question. Graduate school training may likely be in your future as well. Generally speaking jobs in the arts are not the highest paying right out of undergrad (or ever :)) Taking n large amounts of debt may not be in your best interest. The same can be said for many undergraduate degree paths.

This may sound totally wacky; however, why not do a degree in textiles and clothing (that’s what they called it 100 years ago when I was in school)? Classes are available in tailoring, draping, pattern design, among others. The colleges that offer these majors are the land grant colleges across the country. This major would be offered in any school that has home economics. They would also offer theater courses and would certainly have college productions. Another school to look into is FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology–I think); it is in New York City and is part of the SUNY system, which is reasonable even for out of state.
