I really want to use some humor for this Honors College essay (I already know what I want to say), but I'm not sure it's a good idea. Since my other two essays are both serious, is it possible that they might think I'm not taking it seriously?

BTW the essay prompt asks how I would contribute to the honors college community and what I expect in return.

Humor is powerful tool for livening up an essay, but use it judiciously. Just make sure the essay still conveys an important point, and that the humor is inoffensive.

Can you imagine what a chore it must be for an admissions reader to read thousands of dull, dry essays?

Well it basically comes down to whether you’re actually funny/witty, or not

Definitely show your essay to some people to read, and consider their feedback on whether they thought it was funny, meaningful, and showed character, or just painfully cringeworthy and awkward. Good luck!

It would be impossible to tell without seeing how the humor is used and to what effect it is employed. If you think that it could come across as your “not taking it seriously” then that’s probably a sign that you don’t even have confidence in your own ability to pull it off.

Thanks for the replies, I’ll definitely have others look at it.
@"Subversive Asset" I wasn’t mainly concerned about if I can “pull it off,” but I guess that means I should be more confident then.
