Could a C affect my GPA that much?

I didn't receive my report card in the mail last summer, so I decided to ask my counselor about my second semester GPA, and she said I had a 4.189 out of a 5.0.

I'm just a little surprised. I took 6 AP classes last year, and band. For the first semester I had 4 B's or so, and my GPA was between 4.375 and 4.49 (I can't exactly remember). For the second semester, I was able to bring everything up to an A except for one AP class. In the end I had 6 A's and one C.

Could a C really bring your GPA down that much? I would have had a 5.0 if it weren't for that C, and I'm surprised it could bring me down to a 4.189. My counselor checked my GPA on her computer...I just wanted to make sure if this was possible, I'm kind of hoping there's some sort of mistake, or that the 4.189 was the GPA I had in the middle of 2nd semester, and not by the end of it.

All answers are appreciated, thanks you guys! :D

I ran a quick calculation and think you probably had a 4.14 or 4.28 first semester and a 4.71 second semester, for a yearlong composite somewhere in the range of 4.42 to 4.5.

You should learn how to calculate your GPA yourself so you can doublecheck your school’s calculations. It’s not very difficult.

Add up all the grade points you have (e.g. x points for Y grade). Divide by the number of courses (if your GPA is calculated on a semester-by-semester basis, you count the number of courses for each semester).

If you’re taking courses with unusual numbers of credits, it gets slightly more complicated, but you should be able to figure it out.
