Could an acceptance be revoked if you fail the IB exam?

My son received his NYU acceptance end of March of his year. Based on his transcript, he did well and his grades were very consistent the entire year. His teachers at his high school gave him a pretty high predictive grade for the IB.

However, in July the IB results were released and his IB score was significantly lower. He did was not awarded IB certification because of this.

Last night, we received an email from the admissions office asking for a one-page detailed explanation for this discrepancy. They also mentioned the offer of admission was “contingent upon satisfactory completion of any educational coursework now in progress". After we send our letter they said that they would decide on his future at NYU.

Has anyone of you experienced this before? Will my son's acceptance be revoked? Will he still be allowed to attend college there? Will he be on academic probation?

Please share your thoughts/ experiences if any. Thanks!
