Weighted GPA: 3.7
Unweighted GPA: 3.3
Lots of AP's taken and, will be taken, including AP World History, AP Euro History, AP Physics B, APUSH, AP Lit, AP Stats, AP Comp Sci, AP Lang, AP Calc AB, AP Physics C, AP Macro.
Have mostly received A's to B+'s in most of these classes except for World History, and Euro.
Also have taken many other full weight classes such as PLTW's Digital Electronics, Introduction to Engineering Design, and Principles of Engineering, and have received B+'s to A's in these classes also.
Freshman year GPA was around 3.6 weighted, however, I did not do well at all my sophomore year, GPA around 3.35 weighted, although, my junior year, I took very rigorous classes and ended up with a 4.28 weighted GPA, and I will continue this rigorous coursework in my senior year and will keep my GPA high. The reason I did not do well sophomore year was because I had taken so many honors classes and had them all in the same day, and I could not keep up with the coursework.
SAT: 2060 superscore
Math: 720
Cr. R: 700
Writ: 640
Extracurricular's: Key Club (volunteer program), Science Olympiad (have received medals in events in several competitions), Part of a high school leadership program which helps new freshman in our high school, intern on course-notes.org, volunteer at the local library, member of the youth committee on our local cultural society, and a research intern at the physics department of IUPUI for the summer.

The trend in my grades go from average freshman year, to bad sophomore year, to great/amazing junior year, and hopefully senior year also. Two classes I did not do especially well in was honors chemistry and honors algebra II. However, it might be worth noting that throughout my entire high school career, I have always taken the highest level classes available for a specific subject. I come from a very competitive high school with a rather large group of students (over a 1000 in my graduating class alone) and I was wondering if anyone could chance me of getting into Purdue Engineering. Please help, I do not know if my stats are good enough for admittance.
Thank You

You’ll get in. My sis got in with a 1700 SAT and 3 4’s on her AP, and 2 5’s on her AP. Sometimes though some colleges are a bit turned off by students who ‘do too much’ my sister also got an internship in something engineering related. Her application was not clustered but she made sure to outline the strongest things that she did. Putting too many things sometimes overwhelm the person reading the application (Advise from my College Admissions Aunt). She got into NYU Poly, Purdue, Northeastern and Umass Amherst. She ultimately went to Umass Amherst offered her a huge scholarship. She went with money over prestige and she’s a senior in uni rn with huge internships under her belt. She’s worked with the US Army with Nano technology and she’s worked a bunch of other internships. Even though she is in a public school, she’s gotten major job offers from top US companies. She will be going to grad school though and her cost of attendance is already covered plus shes getting payed by the school.

Just don’t let your desire to go to a top name expensive school cripple you. You don’t want to go to a top university with over 200,000 dollars in loans. It makes making money not as much fun. Name doesn’t guarantee internship and jobs, handwork and likability does.

Aee you sure, I’m really worried about my GPA since the overall composite is only a 3.3 un/w. Did your sister get into Purdue engineering? Thanks for the advice!

I am also applying during the early action period, would it increase my chances a little? (I’m an in-state student)

Your GPA is a little bit low as your said, but I would not too worry about that. Particularly you have a rigorous course load to go with that. Someone asked this question at the admission session I went to last week. The guy said there is no minimum for GPA requirement and they will look at the whole application. Your SAT1 is not bad and you are from Indiana. It should be a high match for you. Their acceptance rate is pretty good, so you do have a chance.

Thank you for the reply. I know Purdue engineering is not easy to get into, and all of the stats for their engineering students make me worried about my admittance. I went to their campus yesterday for an Experience Purdue program, and they said the stats for their engineering students were around a 3.9 GPA, and that scares me the most. However, my SAT score is above average for their students. I also heard that their engineering acceptance rate is not as high as the overall universities rate. Any thoughts?

^ That is pretty much my impression too. Their strength is definitely in engineering and would have much higher requirement than the overall admission data. But not all GPA are equal. You do have heavy course load. Being in state with a good SAT score, I believe you should still be a high match. I think I read somewhere their engineering acceptance rate is around 50% versus 65% for the whole school.

Does Purdue also look at the type of school you go to because I go to a very competitive high school where the teachers always put on a heavywork load for the kids. So does GPA mqtter from school to school? Also, do my chances increase if I apply for early action?
Thank You

You should definitely apply early. Not sure if that would boost the chance or not, but it is essential for merit aids and honor programs. Since you are in state, they should be very family with your high school. So don’t worry at all. Is your school one of the major feeder for Purdue? This year it is the first time on CommonApp, so it would be a lot easier for you to fill the application if you are applying to others on CommonApp too.

I would consider Purdue as a match. Your GPA is low, but I think your rigorous course load and junior year improvement will help to make up for your freshman/sophomore year grades. Being in-state is also a plus.

Yes, I would say that our school is a big feeder, maybe around 150-200 students attend, does that make it harder for me to get in? Also, Purdue is probably going to be the only school I apply to on the common app

DancingK: yes my GPA is what I’m worried about the most, it does not seem on par with their engineering stats, when I visited (have been there 3 times) they said average engineering GPA was around a 3.9, any thoughts? I am hoping my rigorous course work and vast junior grades improvement will let them know that I am ready for college coursework. Also, I hope that they will see my internship in the physics department at IUPUI (a local university) will let them know that I am really interested in engineering.

I wouldn’t worry too much about your GPA being below their averages. Your course rigor and strong upward trend is going to set you apart from other Purdue applicants.

Otherwise, I’ll have to agree with billcsho-- apply as early as possible. I believe Purdue still does rolling admissions (unless that’s changed since they switched to the Common App?), so it’s definitely to your benefit to get your app in right away.

I am not sure if it is rolling. But the EA result will be announced on 12/13. So the CommonApp does not really help you in this case. By the way, since it is now on CommonApp, I would expect to see more students applying to Purdue and that may affect the acceptance rate. This happened to UMich a couple years ago. Nevertheless, I think in-state students should not be affected.

Would the commonapp decrease my chances of getting in? Purdue also has their own supplement to the commonapp also, so I would not know.

Since you are in-state, I don’t think you would be affected that much by the increased pool.

I’ve heard from some people that if you ever received a C in a class, that Purdue will deny you from engineering, is that true? I’m worried because I recieved a C/C+ in Honors Chem, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Geometry, but tgese were during my freshman and sophomore year and they were only for 1 semester each. Is this true?

Also, I seemed to have miscalculated my unweighted, it is actually 3.127, how do my chances look now?

You will have a great shot dont worry! I’m applying to Havard,Yale,UPENN,Cornell,Brown,Standord, and Georgetown and I am sitting on the couch watching YouTube lol but ya don’t worry you’ll be ok. Can you chance me please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1532170-chances-harvard-university.html

You’ll get in. Simple answer. If you can bring that GPA up a little you’ll be fine.

Edit: now it’s 3.1… You might have a harder time getting in. Purdue is easy to get into but getting into the engineering program is more difficult.
