Could I get any scholarships to UW-Madison?

  • Progressed to get into honors classes and AP classes.
Junior year: all honors classes except for math, and AP French (highest level in my school)
Senior year: AP Bio, AP AB Calc, AP Literature, and AP Psych (then gym/free period/etc)
  • My cumulative academic GPA is always unweighted at our school and is a 3.54/4.0. My cumulative all subject weighted GPA is 3.87/5.0.
  • 31 ACT

ECs

  • Editor on my school’s nationally recognized newspaper (2 years)
  • Student leader in one of those “get-to-know-yourself” retreats sponsored by the school this year (was accepted to be one next year as well) (2 years)
  • Medical Club member (3 years)
  • After School All Stars member (tutoring kids in less fortunate areas) (2 years)
  • Tutor for kids in a writing program at my school (2 years)
  • French Nat’l Honors Society + Nat’l Honors Society (3 years + 2 years)
  • Peer Group program (program helping freshmen transition into high school, 75 students from the grade are chosen and its selective because its out of about 180)

Extras

  • Work at a juice bar and now at a frozen yogurt bar
  • After School All Stars’ volunteering counts in my hours, however I plan on volunteering in a hospital soon
  • Played lacrosse fresh/soph year, not anymore.

Scholarship need based info

  • Mom makes about 24,000/year while dad makes about 150,000/year

Do you think that Madison will give me any scholarship money? How much? Please help because anything is very welcome! Thank you!!

Similar stats to you (slightly higher ACT and GPA), similar ECs and household income, and also out of state. Didn’t get a penny.

I’d be concerned first with getting accepted to Wisconsin OOS. That GPA is somewhat low on a 5.0 scale. Wisconsin converts to 4.0, unweighted. Generally, Wisconsin offers little in the way of merit scholarships, even for top-performing students. However, as a minority, you may qualify for something more; it would depend somewhat if it is what Wisconsin considers an Underrepresented Minority (URM). There are quite a number of threads covering these issues – check them out, especially the most recent cycle, as it will be the best predictor.

Still, if you’re interested in Wisconsin, do the very best you can in your studies through the end of high school, and do apply. There’s definitely a chance, and your ACT is solid. If you will need substantial merit aid to attend a school OOS, you should also be thinking of a different list of schools.

It’s 3.6/4.0 @anhydrite

You said 3.54, then a 3.87 on a 5.0. If I misread something, I am sorry. You should still work on your grades – a 3.6 could go either way – and you should still apply. There are also smaller, one-time scholarships which you may apply for with a single application. It is usually made available during the fall semester of senior year when applications are open.
