Hello,
I am a high school student currently looking at colleges. I will probably have a 32 or 33 ACT composite, and graduate with a 3.5 or 3.6 weighted GPA (converted from a 12-point scale) from a rigorous private high school (we don’t rank so I don’t know what my class rank is).
I have good leadership positions (Community Service Council President, internships on political campaigns, club involvement), and my main extracurricular is political campaigns (City Council, Governor’s race, and eventually 2016 Presidential campaign). Also, next year as a senior I will be involved with mentoring new freshmen.
I have a strong passion for business and investing, which can be demonstrated to Ross through club involvement and essays.
In addition, in the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I did a summer program at UMich. I am also an out of state applicant.
What do you think my chances are for admission to UMich, and specifically, the pre-admit business program at Ross? I will meet with my college counselor as well, but I plan on expressing serious interest in UMich through multiple visits and talking to alumni/current students that I have a connection to.
Do you know what is the highest GPA in 4.0 scale in your class? wGPA 3.5-3.6 is rather low. How is your course rigor? Also, ACT 32-33 is just near the admission average. The OOS admission rate at UMich is around 20%. Ross pre-admission is even more competitive. UMich is likely a reach for you.
While your ECs are great, your GPA is definitely low, and your ACT score is on the lower side too. There isn’t much time to drastically improve your GPA, but take the ACT again to bump your score to a 34.
Agree with the above - your gpa puts you at risk for not even getting into UMich as an OOS applicant. Ross pre-admit will likely require a minimum 34, and better gpa. Remember, most Ross students were NOT pre-admitted; rather, they applied and got in as sophomores.
You never know. If your essay is fantastic and your EC’s show an early interest and incentive to learn business… you could have a chance. My son is a freshman Ross pre-admit who had a 32 ACT (34 superscored, which they don’t officially consider but look at), a 3.95 weighted GPA from a private HS (I forget what his UW was - 3.75?). But he had co-founded a fundraiser that ran 4 annual benefit concerts and raised a good deal of money for one cause, started a couple of businesses, and wrote (I think) a great essay. There’s a Ross Undergraduate Admissions FB page where what they look at it is discussed. You might want to check it out.
