I am a junior in high school looking at W&M. The trouble is, I dont know if I would even be elligible for application after reading over some of the other perspective students accomplishments. I have a 3.7 weighted GPA. I am only taking one AP class this year because my counselor told me that it was all I'd need for the field I want to go into. (I want to be an EFL teacher) I do plan to take more next year though, in addition to doing a business co-op through the school. I am a member of SAE, concert and marching band, and I am also the president of a book club. My ACT score is kind of low compared to the average, it is a 24. But I hope to raise it this spring. So, do I have any chance at getting into this school or should I just give up and focus on places that I can get into?

As a junior, you still have ample opportunity to take steps to make yourself a competitive applicant (as does any junior) but signing up for the right courses as a senior (we encourage students to take a healthy dose of AP classes including calculus as well as a fourth year of science and the fourth level of a single foreign language), by taking the ACT again or trying the SAT (we encourage any student to take one exam at least twice unless they hit it out of the park on the first attempt) and by continuning to seek out leadership positions in your extracurricular activities.

I can give you some basic profile information. The middle 50% of our students score between a 28 and a 32 so at this point, your ACT is below that range (remember however it’s just a range: 25% of our students score lower than 28 and 25% higher than 32). Remember, we take your best score so if you score a 29 for example when you re-take, we will only see the 29 when reviewing your application. 80% of our students graduate in the top 10% of their class so continue to work hard and make good grades. Hard to determine where a 3.7 places you (it could be top 10% at some schools or bottom half of the class for school where the high is on a 5.0 scale).

Remember every applicant has a chance and if you’re interested, you might as well apply.
