I'm only a junior but trying to get a feel for where I should apply next year. I have a 4.0 uw average, 3 APs sophomore year, taking 6 this year and probably 4 next year (think I'll be taking two community college classes). Scores on those are three 5s so far. PSAT I got a 233, SAT 2290 (800 CR 770 M 720 W). I'm also taken SAT II Bio(800) Ranking might be fairly low, maybe top 20% if I'm lucky, just because I am at a new school that won't weight my transfer credits so the other kids have 2 years of weighted classes up on me. My ECs are weak because of all my moves (3 high schools so far) but I have been in Boy Scouts for several years which is the only one I have spent alot of time in, am an Eagle Scout. I'll also have been in NHS for 3 years.

What do you think my chances are and what should I work on? (If I'm at the same school next year I will try to get involved more)

Well that is sort of the thing, I don't have any musical skills. The only sport I like is basketball and I didn't make the team my freshman or sophomore year so I didn't try out at my new school, I guess I could try to find some volunteering thing I like.

Ranked 14/729 now
at admission time i was 18/729
i would get your parents involved with resoving your gpa problem
its possible if you threaten administrators or pressure them enough that they will give u credit for the weighted ap classes you have taken... 20% will hurt you.
taking all ap classes this year

Government/Economics AP

Definitely get your parents involved in the ranking/weighting issue. Don't worry even if it can't get resolved, though. A simple note from a guidance counselor will clear the situation up for colleges. Don't worry about only being an eagle scout. Colleges like to see dedication, even if it's only to one EC (well, two including NHS). You are in excellent shape for next year.

JoelKhan- you applied Interim Decision this year? How do you know already? (Congratulations, btw!)

I applied early Decission, u get that back in mid december... its a good idea to do ED bc it shows that you have intrest in their school. Thats what they like to see.

If at all possible try to get a few officer positions during your senior year. Run for an NHS spot or even on the senior class. Colleges love leadership.

I will try to get the gpa thing resolved, we have "Junior Planning" meetings coming up in which parents and me meet with counselor, I'll bring it up then.

I am applying to NIH and RSI internships so hopefully I'll get into at least one.

the school ranks based on weighted GPA, and although all the classes I took were weighted, since they are transfer credits they didn't weight them (I'm trying to get them to change that)

Don't stress about your ranking problem. Just have your counselor explain the circumstances in his/her counselor recommendation to Rice. I know this is possible because I just wrote a c.r. for a student.

Also Rice wants to see that students accept and react to obstacles in a mature manner. This is stupid to complain about this. The admissions committee is smart enough to understand your problem.
