I am a junior from Texas and I am very interested in UCLA but I'm afraid it is a little out of my league...

GPA- 3.83 WEIGHTED(low rigor; only one or 2 APs per year) currently ranked 149 out of 660

SAT- expecting 2150+ for june

EC's- pretty weak: 4 year basketball(2 year letter), 4 year cross country(2 year letter) at a 5A school with 2600+ students, National Merit Qualifier(waiting to see if it is commended scholar or semifinalist, probably just commended) NHS, and hopefully creating a new club at school.... sadly i think thats it

Is it even worth sending my National Merit Qualifier scores? If there is no chance what other good schools in cali could I get into?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you don’t have a great chance of getting in UCLA.
Unless you happen to be a minority (and write that into your essay) and low-income, and a bunch of other stuff…

You can try UCSD, UCI, UC Davis, all three are good schools (ranked top 50) and at least a twice as great chance of getting in.

I’m not gonna make any bold assumptions about your chances. But, I will tell you that in my school no one past rank 20 made it into UCLA and only a few people between ranks 10-20 made it in. It differs from school to school of course. Your school might send kids to UCLA up to rank 80 if it is competitive and prestigious.

I think that anybody’s got a shot. Yes, people with higher GPAs and outstanding ECs have more leverage over the average student, but not EVERY student is the top in their class. I think UCLA’s interested in making a diverse and intelligent class. Everyone will be special and belong at UCLA in their own way.

That being said, don’t let what strangers say influence whether or not you apply. I almost didn’t apply, thinking I never had a shot. To cut the Cinderella story short, I did. Apply if it’s what you really want. If it doesn’t happen now, don’t stress. Good things come to those who wait.

I believe it’s UCSD, but it also depends on your major too
Like UCSD’s bioengineering program is highly ranked compared to UCLA’s… So it depends…
But yeah, UCSD…

All UCs are highly respected btw. Go to the school for the atmosphere and experience, not only for prestige :]

Could someone tell me the individual character/ personality of each of the UC’s?
Like Santa Cruz is laid back, Berkeley is Academic, what about SD, SB, D etc…?

SB- party school, beach, aids (haha jk)
Davis- Umm… I don’t know really… Is there even a stereotype for davis? How about… In the middle of nowhere, one with nature?
SD- “LA and Cal rejects” Sad title but some people believe that. SD is like ??? How about… Beach lovers and non beach lovers, party and study
You can’t really stereotype schools

It probably goes SD, Davis, SB, Irvine, Santa Cruz.
If you like to party and socialize try SD or SB, if you’re laid back go with Davis or Santa Cruz.
Also if you’re majoring in anything regarding Biology, Davis is great.

could my parents pay the room and board but i pay for out of state tuition(ive lived in california forever but dont ask) by having a job??
also dont ask about fafsa and cal grants, i got nothing.
