Could I get into any good schools with a 3.3?

I want to major in computer science at a well ranked school. I have a 3.3 GPA. Mainly because I transitioned to a different high school, and that new high school had such a different style of learning/teaching. Plus, I chose to take a bunch of AP/Honors classes (9 APs by the time I graduate). I didn't like taking remedial classes at my school.

So do I even have a chance or is it community college for me? People tell me I shouldn't even bother applying to the University of Michigan (my #1 school). I'm a junior right now.

-3.3 GPA
- ~2000 SAT score (converted 200 PSAT to SAT)
- 100+ hours of community service
- Member of a few community service/charity clubs
- Student of the month 2x throughout high school career
- Received letter of recognition award from Congressman Thaddeus McCotter
- Mixed with four different Asian nationalities? (I don't know, I guess colleges like diversity)

What colleges would accept me?

UMass Amherst (well-ranked in computer science)

Apply to UMich “just to see” but keep expectations low.
There are literally THOUSANDS of schools between Michigan and community college.
Check out Kettering, Kalamazoo, Albion, Alma, Michigan Tech…
Further away, SD school of mines and technology is well-ranked inCS, not too selective, and relatively inexpensive.

There are a lot of good schools that you will be able to go to if you can open your eyes to what makes a good school. There are also some specialty schools that are not name brands but that are very good in CS. At some level, CS is CS but of course a high profile school is nice and has some advantages, but you don’t need it to be successful. You need mad skills. So look into some of the schools MYOS suggests and read the CS majors forum and do some searches on here and you will find a lot of discussions about CS universities and people discussing CS at LAC’s as well.

So you can apply Michigan, and a balanced set of reach match and safety colleges. You might want to identify your safety first. This is an important year for your gpa, and 1st semester of Sr. year so take less AP’s and do better in the ones you do take as a better strategy.

Why would you think that you would have to go to a CC with a 3.3 GPA? I would KILL to be in your position right now. I only have a GPA slightly below a 3.0.
As someone said, you don’t need a high profile brand name to advance further into your field of study.
