My aunt graduated from Northwestern and now she is a successful neurologist but anyways does my aunt count for legacy? She and I are very close and I will be spending this summer with her working at the hospital she use to work at (she started her own practiced) but my uncle works there now (went to vanderbilt worked at Harvard Medical Center prior to moving across the country to marry my aunt)

I don’t recall how the NU application works for legacies – some have drop down menus to choose who makes you a legacy. I know at some schools, aunts/uncles were not considered. For those who have parents who went to NU, the admission rate is almost double the average (I think the overall admit rate was 18% this year and it was around 36% (or thereabouts) for legacies. NU would say that being a legacy is a “consideration” and that it is not a driver but they get many, many legacies as applicants. Admission to NU was VERY tough this year and hard to predict. I saw people with unbelieveable stats get rejected and those with less impressive stats get in however it is highly dependent on your major/school. My honest assessment is that your stats are light but your ECs will help. My D was a double legacy with strong stats and was waitlisted. Good luck. My advice would be to find 3 or 4 schools you believe you could be happy at and not focus on one school. Admission results are just too hard to predict.

Legacy with your aunt will not help as much as it seems you are hoping. It almost exclusively tends to apply with respect to immediate family and (in some cases) grandparents.

Having aunts and uncles who attended NU is not considered as legacy. But if I remember correctly, the supplemental app asked if there were any relatives working at NU at the moment. Does your aunt work at NU? If not, I don’t think your relationship with your aunt will help in any way.

As far as your chance for NU is concerned, you really need to raise your gpa and SAT scores. Have you taken SAT2’s? Hope you did better on your AP tests this month if you took any. Also, try to get some essay worth experience at the psychology internship this summer. Maybe that could give your app a boost…
