hi, I am an out of state student with a 3.4 GPA and around a 1010 on new SAT. it’s becoming more and more difficult to get into SDSU especially with it having a 36% acceptance rate. do you think I have a chance? My family is willing to pay for SDSU seeing it is (at least for an out of state school) a good price. Thank you for your help!
Did you run the eligibility index numbers? http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/freshmen/apply/eligibility-index.html
@Gumbymom can give you more info on SDSU from the view of her son who is a current student.
I think your GPA is too low when compared to incoming freshman profiles.
Local residents can have lower GPA’s and SDSU likes local students.
OP your EI is 3730 which is low for SDSU. For the best chances, you want to be around a 4100+ EI. The lowest posted EI’s for this years Freshman class were in the 3900 range and these were for local applicants. I would say SDSU will be a tough admit. Is the GPA posted your CSU GPA? This could make a difference in the calculation.

Also based on preliminary numbers for this year, the acceptance rate is closer to 30%.
You don’t have a chance, sorry.
Have you looked into Cal State San Marcos? It is also in San Diego County but is about an hour north of SDSU ( with medium traffic)?
OP, what other California schools are your parents willing to pay?
Cal State Fullerton/Cal Poly Pomona/Chico State/San Marcos/Sonoma State/San Francisco State/Sacramento State are several other CSU’s where you would have a better chance at an acceptance.
Very low chances considering you are out of state and have a low GPA (relatively speaking) for SDSU. Cal State San Marcos is a good option, but you will be about 45 minutes away from downtown and most of San Diego’s attractions.
For reference: I got into CSUSM this year, did not apply to SDSU (I could have got in though)
CSU GPA:4.14
SAT: 1610 (1120 M&CR)
a lot of these schools are a relatively higher price compared to SDSU, that’s why I’m very hesitant. most being 40k-50k (not including extra expenses) and even though it’s still expensive SDSU is 33k a year for OOS. I understand though thank you all for your help!
@Lamecelery, where are you looking at $40-50k for our State schools?
SDSU is a CSU
Fullerton is a CSU
CP Pomona is a CSU
San MARCOS is a CSU
CHICO s a CSU
Sonoma is a CSU
SAC State is a CSU
SF State is a CSU
All of the schools @Gumbymom listed are California state schools with the same price.
Or, is it that you only want SDSU, where your chances are not good?
@Lamecelery:
Not sure where you are getting your Cost of Attendance for SDSU but according to the link it is around $37,774 on campus and around $35,408. Since you are OOS, include airfare into your Cost of attendance calculation.
The other CSU’s listed as @aunt bea stated are similar in costs.
You should also be aware that the San Diego area can be pricey for housing costs. We are paying the same housing costs for off campus as we were paying on campus. It will really depend upon how far from campus you want to be.
Many of the other CSU campuses will have more reasonable off campus housing costs.

@Gumbymom Is right. To get cheaper housing, you need to live about 8 miles east or south in El cajon or Lemon Grove. At that point, gas could make up for the housing difference anyways. I don’t live near to CSUSM, so I have no idea about off campus housing up there.
By CA standards, housing will be relatively cheap a short bike ride from Sac and Chico state.
My son is a student a Chico state. He loves it and is learning a ton, will graduate in 4 years and has a cool internship this summer. Not sure where OP is but, Chico and several other CSUs participate in WUE making tuityion for residents of most Western states around $10k which is still pretty reasonable. I wouldn’t pay full OOS freight for the school - or most CSUs. There are simply too many other options.
