Could I get into Virginia Tech =/?

Hey what's up guys? I wanted to know what my chances are if I applied to Virginia Tech next year as a senior, and whether or not I should apply ED. I know I might look bad compared to everybody on this site, but hey, it is worth a try.

BTW I am currently a JUNIOR.

===========================

School Type: Public
Location: Northern Virginia
Race/Gender: Asian/Male
Prospective Major: Computer Science/Engineering
GPA: 3.73
Class rank: We rank after JR. year, so I don't know yet. I know I'm at least in the top 25% of 200+ or so.

===========================

SAT I Math: 710
SAT I Critical Reading: 600
SAT I Writing: 620
Will retake once more in fall.

===========================

Member of FBLA [9-10]
Member of NHS [11]
Took AMC 12: 98.5 [11]
JV Math League [10]
Varsity Math League [11]
Math Honor Society [11]
Heritage Bowl [11]
400+ CS hours @ hospital [as volunteer+trainer]
Probably will maintain these ECs + get summer job.

AP courses: 6
AP World History [10] - 3
AP English Composition/Language [11]
AP US History [11]
Will take AP Government, AP Physics, and AP Calc BC next year.

Mostly honors courses for core classes [English, History, Science, Math]. Our system DOESN'T give any weight to honors classes, but a +.5 for APs.

I'd also like to know any other good engineering schools that I could get into.

thanks a lot guys for any input =]

Anybody familiar with VTech? =/

you are in, VT = easy admissions some kid got into engineering from my school with under 600 math.. still in the top 25% but low rank as far as im concerned.. my school isnt very competitive....

cool thanks. I heard that the College of Engineering was a little harder to get into though

what are my chances if I applied ED?

If you do ED, I'll bet you're a shoe in.

engineering is a little tougher, but you are definitely in if you keep your grades up and keep being involved with your school

try doing UVa ED and VT RD. UVa>VT.

are u kidding, vt should be ur safety...

Not for CS and Engineering...VT > UVa for all things engineering. Different story for humanities and social sciences

uva's engineering is fairly well known actually...

wow thanks guys. I didn't think I had that good a shot @ VT. But I hear VT > UVa, in terms of engineering programs. UVa looks like a reach for me. Anybody know the admission stats for VT's College of Engineering?

uva>VT for engineering in my mind.. VT is where the people at my school go for engineering if they cant get in somewhere better... noone with really good numbers go there.. the top engineering prospective students goto uva or better. after all, engineering is MORE THAN JUST MATH AND SCIENCE, and thats all u'd get at VT, while uva would give you a better over all education..

VT's engineering is much better than UVA's engineering...You would definitely have a shot in the program.

I went to the senior focus this past saturday and the admissions officer said the average GPA and SAT of the admitted class of 2009 was 3.76 and 1230 (All around, not just the engineering school). So it's definitely getting alot harder to get into......

what are some other good colleges with good engineering programs that I have a legitimate shot at?

Georgia Tech possibly. I would think you would have a fair chance at that school.

if you think UVA engineering is better than VPI (yea, I called it VPI)... you're just plain wrong.

UVA will give you a better overall education, and a better education in the humanities, but not in engineering or CS.

edit: to answer the thread, I give you 90% on getting into Tech.

I was looking around for colleges with a good engineering program, and came across University of Michigan, checked out the site and school and looks intriguing for engineering. Is it a reach for me?

Michigan is a great engineering school (one of the best). For you it will probably be a reach. Retake your SAT's and if you get over 2100+ then it will be more of a match. Your stats are very similar to mine...I have:
1330 old SAT (in one sitting)
top 25% class rank
Asian/Male
Similar EC's
I submitted my application 2 weeks past the deadline (Feb 15) and I amazingly enough..I was accepted. O_o The only good part of my app were my essays and recs so I guess that made a huge difference...I thought I was rejected for sure. The odd thing is that they rejected my friend who had a slightly higher class rank and 1400 SAT who applied to LSA (an easier program) in mid-November. I guess the best thing you can do is make yourself stand out and convince them that you're really interested.
