I got accepted by UCSD as a freshman and I am going to attend in September. My FAFSA status in UCSD is being great. In order to be more prepared for college, I am planning on taking two classes in PCCs summer session.
I already filed FAFSA in January, and I put both UCSD and PCC on the list. So can I still get grants to pay for my tuition in PCC's courses? Because I do not know if I can get grants from both coleges, or will it decrease the grants from UCSD to pay for my summer courses?

Thanks you very much.

Summer classes come under the previous years FAFSA. So to find out is you are eligible for aid for summer 2008 you would have to file 2007-2008 FAFSA using the income information from 2006. I do not know if you would be eligible as you would be taking the summer classes not as a degree seeking student at that institution - call them and ask.

If you have any merit awards from USCD be cautious of taking summer classes before you start there especially if you have other credits such as AP credits or concurrent enrollment credits. At my daughters orientation last year it was pointed out that if a student took summer classes at a CC and those credits plus the AP and concurrent enrollment credits totalled over a certain number they would be considered transfer students and lose eligibility for any freshman scholarships they had been awarded. I don't know if this would apply to your school but check to be on the safe side.

summer classes don't always come under the previous year -- it depends on the school! you need to check this out. Where I live, the local community college counts the summer as part of the previous school year (this summer would be in the FAFSA 2007-2008) while the university counts the summer as part of the upcoming year (FAFSA 2008-2009).

you cannot receive FA money from two different schools within the same school year (at least I have been told that it can only be done with the schools communicating and one being the primary or something).

another thing to keep in mind -- you do have limited federal grant and loan eligibility, so if you use some of those federal funds for summer classes then yes, those would no longer be available for you to use at UCSD.

I would be very, very careful about taking summer classes at a PCC and trying to access financial aid for those classes -- talk with both schools (admissions and financial aid departments) and make sure it is kosher with everyone. More than likely, it will not work out.

So basically I am more likely to pay for the tuition on my own.
Only two classes should not cost much, right?

I emailed PCC, and they replied.

"No, You are not eligible for EOP&S at PCC. However, you may be eligible for BOGW (tuition fee waiver) for Summer 2008 since you had PCC listed on your FAFSA. Please stop by the Financial Aid Office before you register for your classes to make sure that you have a tuition waiver on our system for Summer 2008 before you register. "

If I successfully apply for the tuition fee waiver, will it affect on my Financial Aid in UCSD?

Ask UCSD. Better to check and make sure as I am sure UCSD is a bit more expensive.
